Hi.

I now know what to do to create a new style in Microsoft Word 2007. The thing is that I don't know how to create the style I want! Could any of you please help me on this? I will tell you the style I want to see if you can give me the instructions on how to create it, and I want this style for all my manuscript documents.

Chapter headings: Monotype Corsiva size 18
Body: Palatino Linotype 12
Paragraph indent: First line

I tried to do that on my own but I had no idea where to put what. How do I do this?

Thanks
Magali.

You're describing 2 styles. Create one for your chapter heading, based on a Heading style, and a second one for the body text with the first line indent.

Oh, ok! So each setting I do is a different style. Didn't know that. So the heading is a style, the body is a style, and the indent is a style. Question now is how to apply all styles to one document at the same time? Any of you think you could help me with that? :D Please?

I am having another problem and I didn't want to start a whole new thread for it. I cannot click and edit my ticker right from my signature. How do you access a ticker you've created right from Tickerfactory.com? It seems to be the only way I'm going to be able to do it. :(

I don't have a ticker -- matter of fact, I don't know what one is (Those little things that show how many words you've written?). But I do know styles. Yes, "heading" is a style and "body" is a style. But within each of them is the style of the paragraph they are
formatting. So you have to set any indenting, centering, etc. along with each style. Typically my "headings" have NO indent and are centered, bold. and, when they're for chapters, start a new page automatically. The "body" has a first line indent, left justified, etc. You should be able to set up keyboard shortcuts to set the style, automatically number your chapters, set up which style follows another (hit CR and the next paragraph will be style "X." Good luck.

Yes, but my question is how do I do that? How do I create a chapter heading that says Chapter 5 or whatever, with the chapter 5 typed in Monotype Corsiva 18, every time I start a new chapter? That's what I'm having trouble with.

I'm going to have to create a brand-new ticker every time there are changes to be made to the ticker, then. Not a problem. These tickers don't last long anyway. :D Thanks guys.

Hi Magali - you've got several different tasks conflated into one here. Follow these steps, but before you do so make sure you've turned off MS Word's autoformatting options relating to defining styles - those are a nightmare and are liable to mess up any styles you set up.

Once you've done that:

1. Open a blank document and save it as "MS Chapter Template".

2. Type "Chapter" on the first line.

3. Type "Body" on the second line. (Both of these words will, at this stage, be in Normal style).

4. Highlight the entire paragraph for the word "Chapter" and then place the formatting you want on that word/paragraph (ie. centre it, underline it, put it in whatever font you want, at whatever size you want).

5. While the word/paragraph is still highlighted press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S to bring up Styles.

6. Click the New Style button.

7. Enter a name for your style (ie. MS Heading).

8. Make sure that the style is paragraph style in the drop-down list for type of style (the other sort being character style).

9. Click OK.

10. Highlight the "Body" word/paragraph and repeat as above, except this time format it as you want the body text (ie. first line indent, 12pt after, etc).

11. Save and close your template document.

Now, whenever you want to start a new chapter, open your template document and immediately go Save As and save it as a new document. Then start typing.

Thank you so much, Kurzon. You always seem to come through for us and that's really nice of you to take your time to help us out when we need assistance the most. You are beyond awesome for taking your time to do this. There are no words to describe you, frankly.

I favorited this thread just to have your post available to me for future reference.

Thank you
Magali.
