Somewhere on some board, I got directed to the following:

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

I'd forgotten about it until yesterday. I watched Return to Oz the other evening and remembered how many Oz books I had when I was a kid. So I went to the Gutenberg Project and checked out L. Frank Baum and was astonished to see just how many children's books he'd written beside the Oz series.

Anyhow, it's a fantastic source for FREE reading material.

There's a lot more out there, although Gutenberg is the granddaddy of such texts. But my experience with the Gutenberg texts is that the editing quality is highly variable, from excellent to atrocious. Many things appear to have been scanned via OCR from books and had no subsequent corrective editing; these are full of infuriating misspellings, sometimes to the point of being nearly unreadable.

A terrific index to virtually every public domain text available in English is The On-Line Books Page:

This links to Gutenberg texts and many many others.
