I am preparing a MS for an e-book and I need to change the inverted commas; straight quotes (‘for dialogue’) and apostrophes’. I need to change the MS to 'smart quotes.'
I have tried to FIND and REPLACE but I can't make it work. To change the MS manually is painstakingly time consuming and boring. Help please.

I think Find/Replace ought to work in Word; I seem to remember you just search for ' or " and replace with exactly the same thing, and it should convert the straight quotes automagically.
Ah, just tried it in Word 2007 - works fine.

Many thanks, Torgo.
I was Finding a straight quote and trying to insert a smart quote in the Replace slot and it wouldn't work. Cracked it now. Cheers, pal.

Just to clarify for anyone else coming across this thread:
To globally change straight quotes/apostrophes with curly ones, or vice versa, first change the autocorrect settings (both of them), then do a simple 'change all'. It's easy-peasy, but you HAVE to remember to change the autocorrect settings first or else it doesn't change curly to straight or straight to curly.
