Hi everyone
I got an e-mail today asking how much I'll charge for writing a 500 word press release. I have no details on the company, so I don't know if how large or rich it is.
I've never written a press release before although I know how. But since I never thought of doing it at least not yet, I haven't checked out average prices.
So how much is a reasonable price for a basic press release?
Thanks
For press releases, I usually quote a flat fee of $175. This is based on an assumption that it'll take me between 3 and 4 hours, at an hourly rate of $50. Of course it varies depending on what the press release is about, how much I already know about the company and the field, what resources are available to me for pulling together the info. But my time estimate is usually in the ballpark. (Note that this does not involve distribution of the press release -- just straight writing.)
This price is entirely based on my own process and it's not necessarily the right price for you. I'd suggest you think about how long it's going to take you, and what your time is worth, and then come up with a price based on that info. I don't know how my price compares to the "average" but my clients seem to think it's reasonable.
Also I've never been asked to write a press release that's a specific word count. Some methods of distribution (BusinessWire, etc.) have tiered pricing based on the length of the press release, so you might want to ask up front if the 500 words is a strict requirement or if they're just using that as a ballpark figure. It's actually fine for a ballpark (most press releases would not be much longer than that), but if the client has a lot they want you to say, getting it to fit nicely within those constraints could turn into extra work for you.

Based on my experience writing press releases and also subcontracting press releases for PR agencies, $175 sounds in the ballpark, without distribution. Rates may vary based on experience, how much you know the topic, how well you like it, etc.

What is the best amount of words for Press Release? 400, 500, 600?
Thanks, Lisa.

Depends on how much info there is. But from what I understand its about 500. It will fit comfortably in a magazine or newspaper, and should be able to give all the necessary info. A bit over or under is usually ok, depending on what you're saying.
