And why? Is it the story, the art style? Post links to them if they're available, I'd love to check them out.

I'm a big fan of Black Strings, by Ray Fawkes: http://www.tor.com/stories/2009/05/blackstrings

The Phoenix Requiem by Sarah Ellerton

http://requiem.seraph-inn.com/

1. As an artist I love her arts. They're colorful and full of life. Her style is what I always wanted to learn, but I never was able to master. I rather do realistic, detailed 1:1 arts, but I always loved this type of arts better then my realistic ones.

2. As a writer, I like the story what she is presenting. There is a soul in her work and you can feel she is caring with every character, every detail to present her work on the highest level.

3. In my opinion quality arts and quality story is very rare in webcomics, especially together, but Phoenix Requiem has both. I'm wondering why Sarah is never published it via a publisher (But it will be someday.).

4. Bonus point. She is a very helpful lady. She gave some advice regarding my upcoming webcomic. :)

For story and art, I like Dicebox (http://www.dicebox.net/).

For funny, you can't go past The Non-Adventures of Wonderella (http://nonadventures.com/).

It's a good one for definite. Though I don't have much experience of webcomics so don't have much to compare it to.

Do you know of any other webcomics out there in a similar vein? Not necessarily post-apocalyptic or in a similar artisitc style. Maybe something a bit unusual that stands out from the crowd? Would love to hear about it.

XKCD (http://xkcd.com)

It's delightful, and short. I don't have a lot of time to read ongoing story through webcomics, so I like the self-contained ones that don't do big arcs. Don't get me wrong, I love story-driven comics - but I'm too impatient to wait for weekly updates. :)

One of the oldest ongoing web comics out there Sluggy Freelance (http://www.sluggy.com/). Be warned, if you're a new reader it recently achieved its 13 year birthday, and it is updated regularly on a daily basis, although weekends are usually fillers.

I love the D&D-based webcomic Order of the Stick (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html), which starts off as a string of one-panel jokes and develops an incredibly intricate storyline and world.

Every few months I reread the genius Metal Gear Solid webcomic The Last Days of FOXHOUND (http://gigaville.com/comic.php) from beginning to end. Each time I catch more jokes, make more connections and marvel at more of the plotting.

By contrast, I have so many I enjoy that I had to make a special HTML page with all the links, divided into daily, M/W/F and weekly update groups. These include, in no special order, Dilbert (http://dilbert.com/fast/), Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/), Air Force Blues (http://www.afblues.com/), Questionable Content (http://www.questionablecontent.net/), Yet Another Fantasy Gamer (http://yafgc.net/), Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php), Gunnerkrigg Court (http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/), Eerie Cuties (http://www.eeriecuties.com/), Pictures of You (http://picturesofyou.smackjeeves.com/comics/), All Manner of Bad (http://allmannerofbad.com/), Penny & Aggie (http://www.pennyandaggie.com/index.php), Out At Home (http://www.out-at-home.com/), Atland (http://www.realmofatland.com/), Spying With Lana (http://www.harrington-artwerkes.com/Lana.htm), Original Life (http://www.jaynaylor.com/originallife/), Smyzer+Blyde (http://www.jaygeefisher.com/SBLatestUpdate.html), Monster Zero (http://monsterzero.smackjeeves.com/comics/), Jack P. Seconded. And it updates frequently enough that there's new content, but not so much that if I don't get to it for a couple weeks, it's a big time sink to catch up again.

I gotta jump on the Girl-Genius-is-awesome train. That comic never gets old.

And I recently discovered this gem called The Meek: http://www.meekcomic.com/
The characters are so complex and believable, and the artwork is easy on the eyes. It was love at first sight.

PS- The Meek's main character starts out completely nude. So I guess that necessitates a NSFW warning.

Red String (http://www.redstring.strawberrycomics.com/) - typical romantic manga for girls but I like it.
Romantically Apocalyptic (http://www.romanticallyapocalyptic.com/home?page=29) - I was surprised by how funny it is. Considering the genre is after the world ended.
Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/) - The story just keeps getting better.

I follow way, way too many.

I'll skip the obvious ones that people have already mentioned - Penny Arcade, PVPOnline, Questionable Content, Dr. McNinja (though Chris Hastings does deserve props as having one of the best mad-cap series ever!) and give some that might not be as high profile.

Surprised I didn't see Scary Go Round / Bad Machinery (http://www.scarygoround.com/) on here; the story is tight and the dialogue quirky, especially if you're into Buffy speak.

Not a whole lot of people know Sandra K. Fuhr's stuff, but she's got quite the cult following; her work is quirky and a little strange and very character driven, and as her comics have gone on, they're getting darker (her comic 5ideways (http://www.5ideways.com/2005/20051013-1.php), which she stopped updating suddenly, is weird). Myself, I started with Friendly Hostility (http://friendlyhostility.com/), which finished and then turned into Other People's Business (http://www.otherpeoplesbusiness.net/). Very good stuff.

Tweep (http://www.tweep.com/comic/) is quite obviously written by a writer. I know that sounds kind of funny, but he's the kind of guy that likes to play with language and likes to do sonnets and poems in-between arcs. He's also experimented with wordless dialogue, and generally, seems like he has fun simply being a webcomicker.

It's kind of hard to really explain Just Another Escape (http://www.justanotherescape.com/); it tells the story of twelve children living in Rain House, a specialized dorm just for them, with special, magical powers. Like lost, it tells the story out of sequence; some arcs happen in the past, while some happen in the present or the future, each drawn in its own style.

Finally, Fey Winds (http://kitsune.rydia.net/comic.html). An off-kilter humorous fantasy webcomic that can, occasionally, be something resembling serious. Starring a fox-turned-human, an elf with a jewel stuck in her head, and a hard-bitten, cynical mercenary, it follows them as they search for the artifacts of the powerful and mysterious spirit, Sylphe. Written and drawn by a girl that did an absolutely amazing Shadowrun comic...and then dropped it and took it off the web. WHY?

My favorite web comic was Bob and George, it's a pretty well known Megaman 'sprite' comic from a few years ago. It had some pretty good sci-fi concepts and references that I really enjoyed when I was in high school. I haven't really read it since then but I'm sure I'd get a lot more in-jokes now that I've become a much more well read nerd.

I love Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php). I've been a fan of Phil Foglio's art for almost thirty years.

And even though I'm an artist and into intricate, detailed art, my next two favorite web comics are both based on stick figures (and roleplaying games, come to think of it):

Order of the Stick (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0784.html)
and
Keychain of Creation (http://keychain.patternspider.net/index.html)

I particularly like how Padraig O Ruanai, creator of "Keychain of Creation", has managed to make stick figures anime-style.

This one: PRICE FOR THE ASKING, a crime drama/private eye webcomic written by Ron Fortier, who wrote the Green Hornet for Now Comics back in the 90's, and Bill Gladman, who writes a handful of independent comics now. It's good detective stuff.
