Welcome to September! You know the drill. What are your goals? What are you working on?
My goal is to get back to Honey and Garrett and make some good progress on that book. Now that the kids are in school it seems much more doable.
How about you? Yes, you, lurking there in the corner. Come join us!

Splendiferous? that's a big word! lol for first thing in the day! :)
I'd like to get a request from an agent for my first mystery - anyone interested in beta reading the first 50? PM me :)
I'd like to progress in edits on my 3rd mystery
I'd like to finish my WIP.

I'd like to do a lot of things, but here is what I will do:
I'll start working full time on next Tuesday, so I have a small window at the beginning of the month to work on my last edits before beta. I finished editing Ch.8 yesterday and have 20 to go. I also want to add in a couple of short scenes/chapters. Then off to be beta read.
I'd like to throw in a bit extra in that I want to start an outline for the sequel. At the moment I have a random bunch of scenes in my head. Whatever I don't get done will have to get done in October. After three years of passing it by due to bad timing, I want to try NaNoWriMo. ;)

My goal is to get out a whip and snap it around until Jude finishes her Honey and Garret book and then convince her to send a copy to me so I can read it. :D
Oh, you meant writing goals? Oh, alright. Finish my story within the next week and a half and then edit it again and send it to betas before the 25th. How's that?

How about you? Yes, you, lurking there in the corner. Come join us!But... but... :scared:
Here's my sad state: I finished a WIP early this year. I began revisions a few months ago, but that's still very nascent. I have written practically nothing, and revised only slightly more than that. It is all around atrocious, and I blame 80 percent of it on work exhaustion. But that excuse is beginning to annoy me more than anything else.
So here's me, dipping my toe into this thread. Toes make tiny ripples, but they do make ripples. My September goal: Revise a minimum of three to four scenes per week on the RIP (Revision in Progress). Write at least two new scenes on the new WIP (for the entire month). Tiny, but ripples! I need ripples!

Goal: write something. Anything. I've got too many WIPs right now, and I want to make progress somewhere.
And ... (deep breath) ... I want to submit a short story this month. :scared: My "True Colors" short needs some more work on the ending, but I think it's about ready to go. I've never submitted anything for publication before, so I'm trying not to hyperventilate here. Wish me luck...

Good luck! It's fun, even if you do get rejected. :)
This is like a good luck thread, right?:)
I hope so, because I think, wait, know I need it. I have visions and dreams of finishing the remaining 20,000 or so (gulp!) words of my WIP. AND, rewriting some old scenes I am using from a different story, about twice the new words... I can't even say how many, because aghh!
So, my goal is to be ready for revisions of the entire manuscript come october. :scared:

That's really what it's all about! ;)
Just work on getting your BIC 30 minutes a day. After that, you can add more as needed. It's just a matter of making it a daily habit so you can affirm/realize that there is indeed time in the day for writing. :)
Yes! I do agree. But being reminded of it by someone on AW helps a lot in getting that BIC.
Thanks!

Yesterday I got about 1100 words – yay – after encouragement from yous guys:D
Today, so far only 250 and I've been thinking about whether I've got enough danger in my story at this point. Do I continue writing or do I try to figure out if I need more danger? I don't know how to figure that out. When in doubt, add more danger?
I'm going with that. I'll let you know how it works out.

I'm being the white rabbit for this thread: I'm late, I'm late...
Kudos to everyone for your goals! They all sound fab. We'll be "keeping an eye on one another" over the month :poke: which is always helpful
OK, my goals for this month:
1. finish first draft of my sequel historical mystery (that's about 50k in a month, so this is my SeptNoWriMo). I'm fairly confident I can achieve it; I have a detailed outline.
2. Try not to think about my lovely agent submitting Unseemly Conduct to publishers from Sept 7th onwards.
I know that if I start obsessing over the submission process I will just end up as a quivering mess in the corner, with zero word count. :scared:
And for the past few days I have averaged 1400 words. Not quite NaNo writing rates, but I'm getting there...

First things first! Finish the story DeaK, then edit it later. ;)
As for me, I had a better day than yesterday even. 2181 words.
I did indeed throw out all I had written yesterday. Not the edits of course, just the new scene roughly 1070 words or something like that. The new scene has 1825+ words. I'll tweak it tomorrow.
I also edited another three chapters. I've had to change the times of day and a few time line points, so minor annoying have to be done.
Holy crapolly – some of you guys are on fire! Awesome!
I'm going to push myself harder from now on! No more mental whining! No more time-wasting!

End of the second day of September, and I'm jumping in.
Didn't do great in August, but better than I've done on the WIP in the preceding five years or so. So I'm counting it as a win even though I didn't meet my Sept. 1 BOOK IS DONE deadline.
This month, I want to finish the story and begin the edits. The many, many boatloads of things that need to be fixed. THIS MONTH!

It's Sept 2nd already? Shesh!
My goal is to finish my first draft of The Milk Carton Murders. November is such a drab month for me. Must be how I got through 50k in one month and it's taking me how many months to get it done?
So September will be to finish it. October will be editing something else and getting an outline ready for Nov NaNoWriMo. Which I'm going to work on a story I started (about 5 chapter in) before I did NaNo.
(Last Nov I was in the mood for something totally different by the seat of my pants.)

Got a little more editing done, but I've got high hopes for getting actual writing done over the three day weekend.
I'm in for NaNo again this year, too. The last couple of NaNos I spent attempting to finish old projects, but this year I've got an idea for a new novel which ought to be pretty fun. Working title is "Storm Truce". Yep, it's a contradiction in terms. :D
Oy – I can't even consider nanowrimo right now.
But, yesterday I got my 1000 words and today I'm already half way to the same. I'll be trying to hit my 1000 every day, including the weekends, until I'm done with this thing. Burnout, I dare you!
Just wanted to add, now, that I'm done for the day with 1500 words. I hit it in the butt, what.
And I don't want to jinx it, but I also want to say that I have been feeling much more motivated that usual because of this thread:)

I'm doing what Namatu did last night. Oh my God, I was even supermarket challenged tonight. Bought the wrong thing and had to switch it, got energy efficient laundry soap instead of the stuff for the dishwasher, couldn't get the stupid seal off the dressing bottle. Just stupid weird stuff, so ya, not safe to write so I'm R & R-ing it tonight....
I did write on my lunch on my jornada though, but not sure of the word count as pocket word doesn't have that feature. Glad to see a bunch of us NaNoing---should be interesting!

No words yet. I think I broke the brakes on my car. :( And I just had it repaired and fixed up and it was perfect again and then I broke it. :( Now I'm terrified to even drive it anywhere, and I can't even begin to have it fixed until Tuesday. :/
HistorySleuth
09-05-2010, 01:21 AM
Well, jeez Kaitie, if you'd stop letting your superheros borrow the car, you wouldn't have the problem of them slamming on the brakes too hard now would you? :D
Not sure how much "new" words I'll have this month, other than another article for our up coming history quarterly. I'll only be working on my WIP during lunch, and free minutes here and there.
I'm shifting focus back to formatting my Indian Land title stuff into a book to put up on createspace. I was going to wait on that, but I need to strike while the iron is hot. Its a niche thing for sure, but NYS is going to try and tax the Indians on cigarettes they sell on the Reservations again. Signs all over the one Res, "New York has declared war on the Indians." At the moment a judge ordered a stay, so that should give me two weeks.
I've spoken before to groups on the Cattaraugus Res on land title...is that what they mean by a platform? Anyway, I think the information may be useful. So I will be editing, but I'll get some new words where I need to expand.

Good luck, HistorySleuth. :)
On second thought my car might not be as bad as I thought. I think I know what happened and it should be okay now, and my uncle's horrible dreadful diagnosis of expensiveness looks like it's probably wrong. So woot. I'm still going to avoid driving it until Tuesday and then call up the nice mechanic I took it to before and see what he thinks, but (fingers crossed) here's to hoping it's okay and doesn't need another expensive repair.
In the meantime, Kaitie is calm again and is now writing. :D

Bah! No words for a couple of days now, but it's not my fault:
We had a Freakin' Earthquake!!!
My sweet little sleepy city (Christchurch, New Zealand) had a 7.1 Richter-scale earthquake at 4:30am Saturday morning (we're UTC+12). It was pretty scary; we haven't really slept for 36 hours or so, because there have been 40+ aftershocks, which make us pretty jumpy.
Property-wise, we have suffered very little damage to us personally, but the city is a mess, and central city has had a lot of damage to historical buildings. :(
At our house we lost power and water for most of the weekend, and still have to boil our water before drinking/washing (but then some people can't drink their tap water ever, so that's no great hardship.)
Only one person has died, as far as I know, which is amazing considering that the earthquake was the same size as the one which hit Haiti. It helped that it struck at 4:30am, and that we live in a nation with fairly good building codes and infrastructure, I suppose.
Anyways, the point of the long story is: no words from me over the weekend. I'll get back to it on Monday (touch wood there are no more quakes).
To everyone else, keep up the good work :Sun:

First off, thoughts and prayers to Steampunkette and everyone else around Christchurch.
Now, all about me...
I've temporarily given up on the Diversionary Fun Side Project. I think it's very sellable, and the quicker I get it done, the better, but I'm reaching the point where I need to do some research and I think I'd rather research Alex and Julie's stories some more first.
So the last few days I started working on Book 3. I wrote pages and pages of notes and an outline, and now I've got 3,020 words that could actually make it to the final version.
Book 3 isn't a murder mystery. I was asked what term one would use for "The Da Vinci Code," and I came up with "puzzle thriller." Which inspired me to start working on the one I'd had in the back of my mind.
So I can probably get another 5,000 words written before I have to answer some big questions - the starting point is a "to be opened upon my death" letter that was lost for nearly fifty years. I have to figure out how to introduce the bad guys so that it's actually a thriller. Otherwise they solve the puzzles at their leisure and it's kinda boring. And I have to read up on the history of the Congo for some important flashbacks.

When I'm on a roll, I do about 500 words an hour. If I didn't have a job, I could probably do 4,000 words a day. Maybe if I win the lottery - then I could be the rich, exciting author even without having sold any books!

Well I had a great afternoon. The park was quiet save for a few random passers by. It doesn't have to be finished at 50k. If you want, you can start something that's going to be 100k, and just make sure you get 50k done during the month. The main goal is hitting the word count. :)

What Kaitie said. I've "won" NaNo five times now by hitting the 50K mark on each story, but none of them were finished at 50K. Maybe this year...
One thing to consider is that for NaNo is that you might want to work on something which is not too near and dear to your heart. Putting too much pressure on yourself makes it difficult to finish.

I was wondering what I could write that would be potentially marketable afterwards at that word count. and the thought of going back to beef up a WC with new scenes, etc, was too much. excellent to know!
I might not know exactly what I'm doing until I start then. It's probably going to be the thriller though....I want to write something dark that will keep me propelled to move forward. The only thing with the thriller is I need to do some more research on the FBI and the criminal mind before I get into it. guess it depends on the time I have to outline.

NaNo is a great time to start a new project that you wouldn't necessarily go for, Sassy.
Last year I didn't venture too far from my comfort zone, and wrote a 1920s flapper mystery. But this year I'm going trans-genre ;) and writing a humorous urban fantasy... my homage to Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, with lashings of Diana Wynn Jones for good measure :)
ETA this year I am trying not to obsessively outline. I ALWAYS outline for my mysteries, but I think I might try and liberate myself, since this won't be an MTS genre...

not really sure what I'm doing for it yet but it's definately having an outline lol...the 3 books that show as WIP's in my sig, well as least 2, were without any outlining. the 3rd one listed there is very young. But as I've worked on Found Innocent, and more recently put all my efforts into Restitution, I find there have been times when I lag thinking about the next step in the story. I don't need that during November :Hammer: lol
I have some novel ideas for Romantic Suspense novels...we'll see. might not know until Oct 31st what I'll be writing the next day...there is a certain stress relief not worrying about researching before this, and given the fact I'll be coming off another novel that would have just been finished.....

I'm looking forward to NaNo to write a rather crappy 50k word version of my next project.
Hopefully, all the plot kinks will get worked out so I can write a really good version the second time around. Of course, I don't mind rewriting something 5-6 times like my last project. I have five different beginnings (i.e. chapters 1-7 at least!) to that story.
Of course, I am hoping to get through the second novel without quite so many rewrites, but you never know. ;)

Last year was my first NaNo and I just winged it. In fact it's the WIP I'm still working on it. Takes me 30 days to do 53k, and 9 months to do the rest. Funny. But really, I think if it was any other month, I just couldn't do it. It was crazy fun though. I had signs on my desk. The peps at work were into it, my kids -- routing me on. I'm looking forward to the free spirited insanity.
No words for me today, I'm still editing. I did end up editing over 30k words last week so that's good.

I'm still on track to get finished with this final draft before the end of next week! Hopefully I'll be able to start sending out queries before October.
I'm doing Nano too. Last year was my first year. It was a total blast. Good thing I'm finishing my current wip soon -- I'll need October for obsessive outlining. I'm an outliner, an under-writer, and a Nano-er. In other words, a glutton for punishment. :)

TheIT, thanks for the update on the kitty. I'm glad it's going well. And yeah, I had one of those nice-to-monsters too. He has mellowed with age, but he used to actually spit at the vet the second he saw her. It was pitiful and very, very funny at the same time. :tongue

I had a major revelation today while making a PB&J for my daughter. I think I've figured out how to fix the opening of my story. I'm totally excited, even if it means I've got to cut a ton of words.
Would anyone be willing to take a look at options A, B, and C for the opening and let me know if any of them actually works? Not more than 4 or 5 pages total. Please PM me!

Hello all
I know we're halfway through the month but I hope I can still belatedly join in this thread.
I've been facing a writing drought for weeks, ever since the WIP stalled.
I have now begun a new WIP - book 2 of my amateur sleuth series. Facing down Chapter 1 of Draft 1 is always pretty daunting but I wrote the first 1000 words today.
My goal is just to write. Something. Even a thousand words a week is better than nothing. I now have two WIPs, so there's no excuse not to keep writing. If I'm having trouble with one, then I should be working on the other one.

Hi Shara. :D Glad to see you here.
Today I'm gonna see if I can't get through the big climax. I need to finish off this scene, write one more short one, and then just a couple more after that to be finished. Not sure I can get all that writing in today, but I think getting through the climax itself should be doable. That's the goal anyway. Wish me luck. :D

Namatu - I'm in the same boat I think. I've been working on an alternate ending for my story. It pains me to think it will make more of an impact as an ending. But I'm having trouble bringing myself to do it. It actually bothers me as the writer, but as a reader I'm thinking it might be a woah---- really? I've got a lot of clues and red herrings I can tie up any way I want, so it is doable. I don't know why I'm having such a problem with it. It's my first attempt at fiction, so maybe I'm just not used to the feeling, or is it normal?
Good luck Kaitie! Looking forward to hearing you say, "I'm done!"

Oh well... It's a little progress. ;)

Worked a little on a synopsis today. Wrote one ages ago, but now I'm cleaning it up and making it sound better. It's kind of boring, but man this is a tough story to describe. So much backstory needed!
Anyway, the wonderfulest Hey Jude gave me a brilliant way to fix my plot problem that my alpha reader picked up, and so tomorrow I'm going to be cleaning that up a little so I can send it to my betas. Woohoo!

I'm editing several scenes and it all seems to be coming togetther nicely. I'm actually starting to believe I can do this! :D
:e2cheer: Yes you can!!! :e2cheer:
the wonderfulest Hey Jude :o
My brain came up with something good after ignoring me so thoroughly the other day. It's ambitious but I :e2cheer: can :e2cheer: do it!!! :e2cheer:

Better or worse than when I discovered the pinata smilie?

Man, is there anything that smilie doesn't apply to?
Okay, I'm going to go write. Soon. Honest.

mr write, I assume you're referring to HJ's cheerleader usage? what did you think of my walking dog and lady doing laundry lol....you don't really have to answer that.
anyway, I was kind of stuck the last day with the direction of my wip - how to get from point a to b. But I think I have it figured out now. If i'm able to fit in writing on lunch break, I might actually have new words to update here. as it is this morning only 96 words lol
As it is though, the pause with the WIP is working out good for my third mystery. have finished pass-through edits for 100pgs now. my husband might actually get the book to read by this Christmas break!

Phew! I dodged one there! Just kidding. It was cute. I'm a big fan of smilies. Especially that mooning one...I just have to be careful when I use it :D

See Jude, your brain just need a break to come up with something awesome for you!
A psychic story MrWrite? Love that stuff.
Sassy, I love the laundry lady! I probably could use that on every post. Or a vacuuming lady, or a minivan lady. Actually I don't own a mini van and my kids don't do sports. I just feel like a soccer mom. Sigh ........
Well, doggies are taking their morning nap so I can get some writing time in. Haven't heard back on my rescue puppy. :cry:When I say puppy don't be thinking I'm talking about a cute little romp around one like on the toilet paper commercial. A 9 month old pit mix is NOT a small creature, but it has just as much energy if not more. Me is getting done tuckered out!

Well, nothing new for me today, but I did make it through 43 (single-spaced) pages in editing. Not a major edit this time, just a small one. Fixing up some wording and stuff. Tomorrow I might rewrite the ending (gonna be sort of major). Oh, I also figured out how I want to start the next one I think. Need to write that down tomorrow before I forget, too. :)

We are a scary lot, aren't we? Getting excited about killing people... :D
So I got 2025 yesterday. I brought my characters to this place where they were breathing a sigh of relief, thank God all that's over. It's still a mess, but we can cope with the mess. Then I set them up for a murder they didn't commit. And we're off again! Super fun!

When I reasoned out why I was allowed to take a break from my last WIP I included the rationale that my MC was tired. How could I start throwing stuff at her again when she's so tired? Look what I just did to her. Now I was going to do more? It just seemed mean. She needed a vacation.
I can be nice sometimes. Of course, I know what happens on her vacation. She's not getting much sleep. :evil

Ugh, I'm making my query list and found a couple of agents who sound perfect and I want to query now! I know, I know. I'll be good and wait at least a week. :tongue Maybe even until after I hear back from betas, but at the very least until I've finished my current edit and rewritten the ending. And believe it or not, I'm a very patient person. ;)
The interesting thing is that one of the agencies I'm currently looking at requested my last manuscript, but it was a different agent. I know I'm just reading summaries and I haven't even met these people, but this lady sounds awesome. Which I suppose is all the more reason why I shouldn't query too early.
*Grumbles and goes off to edit some more*

And in my quest to trim words, I added 100.

Chapter 1 is now about 7400 words long, but I think it flows better than before. I've got lots of other places in the manuscript where I can whittle away excess wordage.

So much excitement today! Nathan's blog contest, steampunkette's 50K milestone, HS's love of peanuts.
I missed it all because I was languishing in QLH. I got some very helpful feedback, though. I may have to restructure my novel -- yes that's right the whole darn thing -- because of that feedback, but it's all good. I was going to do a "big picture" final pass over the novel anyway.
Oh, and I did manage 493 words today.

I am so tired! I'm sick with a cold right now, and I should have been in bed two hours ago when my body tried to tell me I should. Though, 51 more pages of editing today. Not terrible considering how much time I spent watching Nathan's blog today. ;)
Anyway, I'm going to bed. I'm literally falling asleep at the computer. Tomorrow will hopefully see me get through another big chunk.
