This reminds me of another little story:

I work at a zoo, where a long time ago (1996), a baby elephants was born. The mother promptly rejected it. Things didn't look good for the baby, until Rafiki came along. Rafiki, which is Swahili for "friend", was a young La Mancha goat. The baby (Kijana) was thriving with human company and Rafiki. For eleven months, things were wonderful. However, just before his first birthday, Kijana died. We buried him on the back hill, where all of our animals are laid to rest, but we still had Rafiki. He became a petting zoo goat, where he lived happily until his death just a couple months ago.

But even before I thought of that, I thought of Oscar. Oscar was my best friend. He was an alpine goat, and a beautiful one at that. He had a thick, tawny coat and huge, impressive set of scimitar horns. He was huge, but extremely gentle. He'd let me sit with him, and he'd lick my face... I spent as much time with him as I could.
Oscar also had another best friend: Felix, a Nubian goat. Felix wasn't nearly as nice as Oscar; he'd butt the children, bite me and the other keepers, and was just a real safety hazard. We knew we couldn't keep him in the petting zoo, and he was so unhappy when he was put in the back so he couldn't hurt anyone. You see, Felix and Oscar were a package deal for the zoo, and if we gave up one, we'd have to give up both. It was for them: they were inseparable! Eventually the decision was made that Felix could no longer live at the zoo, so he was sent to an elephant sanctuary in Tennessee-- THAT elephant sanctuary. Of course, Oscar had to go too. I was out sick when they made the decision, and by the time I came back, both goats were gone. I cried a lot that day, but it comforted me to know that they were going somewhere where they would have lots of food and room to frolic and butt heads. Together.
And somewhere on that sanctuary, right about now, there's two cloven-hooved best friends running around, messing with elephants and dogs and causing all sorts of mischief!
