So, I'm reading Jenna's book (so helpful) and of course all the information on this forum, and I've repeatedly seen the advice to always, always query before writing an article. But what if Writer's Market says: "Submission Method:Send complete ms"?

Should I just skip over publications that ask for complete manuscripts? Do you ever submit an article without querying?

When they want a complete MS I usually query anyway. Then they can tell me if I am completely off track or if they like my idea, but with a twist of their own, etc.

I've done both, but generally query first. On a couple of occasions I've written the complete story more because I was inspired to do so and figured I'd find a way to sell it eventually than for any other real reason. These were food-related articles so I was playing with the recipes anyway.

Thanks for the input!

Kind of depends on what your article is. With essays complete manuscripts are sometimes requested. I tend to go by what the guidelines say. Some do accept complete manuscripts. I will say all of my first sales were from sending completed manuscripts (only to places whose guidelines permitted, of course).

Well, yes, essays and humor pieces are a whole different animal from articles. Although I have still had luck querying those before subbing to make sure I was right on the mark, it is the piece that always sells it.
