Hi all,
I apologize if this is a repost or already covered, I could not find it in the forums. I wanted to submit a few articles to magazines/newspapers, and was wondering if there are standard guidelines in submitting the work? I am familiar with the associated press guidelines, but wasn't sure that applied to magazines as well?
thanks

With few exceptions, each publication will have an independent writer's guidelines which can usually be found on the website or by emailing the editor. Once arriving at the publication's website, search for tabs like "writer's guidelines", "contact us", "contribute", "contributor's guidelines", "staff list", or whatever other category might have the guidelines. If you have run out of options without finding guidelines, then simply email their editor (info to contact them is usually in "contact us", "about us", or "staff") a brief note expressing your interest to write for them and request guidelines.

Also, check out Writer's Market (most libraries have a copy) for basic formatting guidelines and helpful start-up info. Good luck!

If all else fails, gather a few copies of the publication and read the types of articles you're interested in submitting. You can get an idea for the tone and structure they prefer, as well as nuts and bolts like what types of sidebars they use, whether or not you need a concluding paragraph, what sorts of sources you need, etc.
