I've been trying to figure out how to color my panels with Elements since it's too expensive for me to get the $600 program. Anyone know where the "Line-Art" channel is? I've been going crazy trying to find it. I bought a book that takes you step by step through coloring and so far everything that it has had has been in this program. I only hope Line Art is as well.

Help!

Have you tried Gimp? It's free and similar to Photoshop.

Line art channel? When I've colored in photoshop or gimp I put the lineart in it's own layer (bottom layer if it is scanned and has a white background, top layer if it is digitally inked and has a transparent background). But a layer isn't the same as a channel. There are approximately 4 color channels per layer, depending whether you are using RGB/alpha coloring or CMYK coloring. Personally I don't use channels for much of anything.

Thanks for the info. I've never heard of Gimp. I'll have to check it out, but I'm assuming you haven't had any trouble with bugs?

Bugs? No. Gimp is the biggest most well-respected opensource art program there is, a LOT of people have donated labor to exterminate bugs and add features to it, it's more or less as good as Photoshop.

Oh boy.

There is no mystical 'line art' button. (Nor are there 'make this good' buttons, or 'color this perfectly' buttons.)

Usually, I import the scan of line-art and make that the background layer, or just draw directly in photoshop.

Gimp has the exact same functionality as PS, and is a very highly regarded open source piece of software. I can't think of one digital artist who hasn't at least heard of it...
