When sending out samples (particularly those with first or reprint rights available) do you note which rights are available within the document?

I've heard that some writers do this so that the editor reading the sample will know that it is available to be published through them. Of course, I know that it wouldn't be a good idea to send a reputable publication all (or any) unpublished samples.

You usually send samples to show of your writing skills. They go along with queries for another article or with a letter of introduction. Since it's easy to forget altering the document if the rights situation changes, I would recommend mentioning it in the query -- or tell them after you get the job based on the query or letter.

My samples are often unrelated to what I'm pitching. In an LOI maybe it would be a good idea to include samples and rights info, but for a query, I stick with focusing on the query.
