View Full Version : Stumped installing Windows 7
My windows XP PC got infected with the Google redirect virus and nothing I've done has worked to kill it. Believe me, I've tried everything short of contacting TRON and having him go in after the little bast@@d.
I decided I'd upgrade to Windows 7. At first I was going to format my hard drive and install from there, but the Windows 7 instructions say leave XP alone, and you can delete partitions afterward.
I got as far as Step 2. Where do you want to install Windows 7? The program didn't recognize my hard drive. I found a list of drivers in C:\drivers\storage\R153863. I systematically tried each of the ones Win 7 listed as compatible. The program still can't find my C:\ drive.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. don't bother with suggestions for removing the redirect virus, I've tried tham all.

That would be my suggestion.
Good luck.

FORMAT EVERYTHING, get UBUNTU or Linux, their are much supportive in terms of help :)
Have you tried to just reinstall XP? That way you can reformat the drive and kill the virus, abort the XP install and do Windows 7.

I'd probably go ahead and reformat the hard drive before installing Windows 7. The problem with deleting the partitions after you install Windows 7 is the virus, depending on the type, can still be there, and the only good way I've ever found to get back control of a PC is to reformat the drive and start over.

Are you using a sata hard drive? If so, I seem to remember Windows 7 having a problem with them. You may want to do a search on "Windows 7 Sata."
I also agree with the above posters: format the drive if you can.
Good luck :)
Thanks for the suggestions. I couldn't get TRON to help me, so I got the next best thing. My son is a network administrator at Cornell University. I drove there yesterdy (3 1/2 hours each way) and he figured out the problem and installed Windows 7 and downloaded all my documents and reinstalled MS Office 2007, and the other programs I still need. I retrieved my Outlook PST file and my internet favorites from Mozy.com (off-site backup service). Now everything is running like a Toyota with a stuck gas pedal. Really, it looks like all my computer problems are behind me. Thanks again.

Think about installing Microsoft's free security suite; don't install multiple security programs unless you know for a fact that they work well together. Sometimes they step on each other's toes, and create problems.
I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials as my only AV or anti malware. Here's hoping it lives up to its reputation.
