Okay, so I'm sending out a story to Asimovs, and to make sure I get the formatting right, I'm following Vonda McIntyre's guide (http://www.sfwa.org/writing/vonda/vonda0.htm) to the letter. My question is, on Page 2 (http://www.sfwa.org/writing/vonda/vonda2.htm) of her manuscript she ditches the header that she had on the first page (http://www.sfwa.org/writing/vonda/vonda1.htm) and switches to a McIntyrre/X Page number format.

Every time I try to duplicate that in Word, my header on the first page gets overwritten with the header (Harris/X Page number) that I'm trying to put on subsequent pages.

Now, I know that it may not bother anyone but me, and I know that it's probably not going to get my story rejected outright (no, the cheesey dialogue and shoddy characterization will do that), but now that I've discovered that I don't know HOW to do it, I really want to figure it out.

Go to headers in word, click on the open book for setup click different first page while on page one. This allows you to put whatever you want there, then proceed to page two and put in your running header.

It's a miracle! I knew someone would know. Thanks a bunch.

Also, if I understood you correctly, you have in the Header/Footer Toolbar the option to differentiate between two diff kinds of headers/footers, like one for Ch 1 and another for Ch 2, or one for this page and another for that one. Go to the toolbar (activated thru View/Header/Footer) and look for "Same as Previous" icon, the one which shows two pages, side by side, connected underneath by a dotted line which goes from the rigtht one to the left one. Check it or uncjeck, as the need may be.
