a person I work with has written down a novel about growing up in the Ukraine during the Second world War. he recently wrote a shorter version, thinking perhaps a magazine might be interested in it. does anyone know of any magazines that would be interested in such a story?

Is it inspiring like Reader's Digest buys? Is it full of the history of a place so that a history mag might like it? Your friend is the best person to answer this question based on what his or her story is about in less broad terms. (You said it was during WWII, that's not my specialty but I am positive there is at least one magazine out there that focuses on that war.)

If he can transform it into a personal essay, there is no dearth of markets that would be interested in that sort of thing. In fact, I'd recommend that he write various essays in different word lengths (600 words, 1,200 words, 2,00 words) and market them to magazines and newspapers that run them. The most obvious ones would be the New York Times, Newsweek, etc, but depending on the subject matter, he could easily sell to AARP, Self or Elle. There are also publications that specifically buy personal essays, such as Skirt! magazine.
