Sort of speaks for itself. I'm just propping my chin up out of my lap. It doesn't look real.

Wow! It really does look fake...like those 3D chalk drawings they make on the street. Wow.

I'm pretty sure it is real, though. Much of Guatemala and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico are underlain by porous limestones, which dissolve, forming massive cave systems and occasional roof collapse features, called cenotes. Google that, and you'll get some spectacular images. Google also "sinkhole Guatemala images".

weird. it looks fake or manmade. seems a sink hole wouldn't look so symmetrical unless it was a prior hole that had been filled in.. but I'm not a scientist and I didn't click on the link....

Ha, I was just over at cnn.com checking that out. It truly is jaw-dropping. The earth is a funny, crazy, scary, fascinating thing. I'd love to climb down and see where the hole goes.

I can almost picture Gerard Butler kicking someone in, shouting, "This is Guatemala!"

Ohh, that's right. Try and cover your tracks now.

But if you are in Honduras, please be careful! These storms sound treacherous.

They are commonly very circular. Physics. A weak point develops to collapse, and the sides fall in in a radial pattern.

I was trying to get to your house, Perks. I took a shortcut and got lost.

The GPS just said, "At your next opportunity, make a U-turn..." at which point I traded my SUV for a burro.

Shit. Honduras or Guatemala or both? Geography is one of those horrible things that will not stick.

ETA - Googled it. Will forget it in twenty minutes anyway. I'm sorry. But don't feel slighted. I can't find Wyoming either.

From another view, it looks like it opens into a cavern. The residents say its caused by a bad sewage system, but yet I don't see no stinking pipes running through it...

I does look like that hole the Preditors made in Aliens vs Preditors...

Here's a hi-res (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gobiernodeguatemala/4657053554/sizes/o/in/set-72157624035870825/) copy of it. There's some people milling about - that really REEEALLY made it that much bigger to me.

It's the rectangular one, sitting on top of the other rectangular one.

Men and women, I'm going to begin a journey to the center of the earth. Hopefully we can find Carvorite to help us build flying battleships to help fight off the Martians, who have taken most of England!

It's not the aliens I know. They wouldn't be there. They're in San Diego.

In all seriousness, the hole/tunnels (look for other pictures) does look an awful lot like medieval descriptions of entrances to the otherworld (where other = fairy, and also, where other = hell).

And references to "the grays," etc. also match closely medieval descriptions of otherworld intruders (and various neurological ailments).

A sinkhole in Quebec opened up and killed a family of four only a few weeks ago while they were in their basement watching Montreal in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Crazy.

One of the startling things about the 1994 L. A. quake for me were that so very many bigger-than-a-car sink holes were made/uncovered. There was one on the UCLA campus that made it abundantly clear to anyone who hadn't known that it was built on a swamp/wetlands.

I think it was made by a giant gopher tortoise. It looks about right, but no, I'm not serious. It's obvious Jules Verne dug it. . . .

Oh, please. Like us Scots haven't known for years they're Martians.

As for Wyoming, it's where I always think Wisconsin is. Or the other way round...
