View Full Version : Michael Steele, Private Jets, and Bondage Clubs?

According to two knowledgeable sources, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele once raised the possibility of using party money to buy a private jet for his travel.

“I know that … regular ongoing use of planes was something that was looked at,” says one person with direct knowledge. “I can’t speak to how serious those inquiries were.” Both sources say Steele considered purchasing a plane outright, or buying fractional ownership in one, through a company such as NetJets.

Steele’s spokesman, Doug Heye, did not deny that such discussions took place, responding that the RNC never had a “plan” to buy a plane. “I don’t know what somebody might have discussed or might not have discussed.”
While Steele has not purchased a plane, he continues to charter them. According to federal disclosure records, the RNC spent $17,514 on private aircraft in the month of February alone (as well as $12,691 on limousines during the same period). There are no readily identifiable private plane expenses for Democratic National Committee chairman Tim Kaine in the DNC’s last three months of filings.

Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,620.71 spent [update: the amount is actually $1,946.25] at Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex.

RNC trips to other cities produced bills from a long list of chic and costly hotels such as the Venetian and the M Resort in Las Vegas, and the W (for a total of $19,443) in Washington. A midwinter trip to Hawaii cost the RNC $43,828, not including airfare.

The Daily Caller editor, Tucker Carlson, responded to RNC complaints about the story:

Our questions remain: Why did the committee spend more than $17,000 on private jets in the month of February? How and why was RNC business conducted in a bondage-themed nightclub, and how and why were the nearly $2,000 in charges that resulted approved by RNC staff?

To be clear: We did not claim that Michael Steele personally visited Voyeur West Hollywood. In fact, and unfortunately, we still know almost nothing about that trip, including its purpose. If the RNC provides details, we’ll put them on the site immediately.

The Daily Caller requested interviews with Michael Steele on Jan. 14, Jan. 15, Jan. 18, Feb. 10, Feb. 23 and again on March 23. All were denied.
The story we ran today is accurate, as the RNC knows.

He's a liability, as is any other politician over thirty who refers to government spending as "bling bling (http://pushingrope.blogspot.com/2009/03/michael-steele-quote-machine.html)".

I am pleasantly surprised to find that a member of the GOP supports gay rights and alternative sexual practices. He should take that with him on tour next time.

Who doesn't like a scrotal clamping from a dominatrix?

I'm glad as hell he's not on my team. But after a cruise around the blogosphere, I gotta admit that I do wish the left-wing pundits would lay the hell off the offensive racist photoshopping crap. They're getting pretty damned embarrassing, and makin' it awful hard to claim the high ground.

At least he's not spending taxpayer money.

However, this is just one reason I do not send money to any political party - even if I agree with their overall philosophy.

Seems Steele didn't get the message when the Republicans got thrown out of Congress in 2004 because of reckless spending.
Time for a wake-up call?

I don't offer any surprise at this news...but do wonder why any person that claims to be a bit educated would ever put a strip club down on their expense account. Especially someone involved with something as large as the RNC. Call me stupid. I would think they would pay cash for their sexual stuff. Leaves less of a paper trail. :tongue....err...so I have been told.

Regardless of where the money came from, it has less to do with that than it does with the blatant hypocrisy involved, given the pure moral high ground to which the G.O.P. likes to lay claim. Methinks that's what will do Steele in, rather than the money issue.

Exactly.
That was the point of the rest of my post.

How may of you can name the head of the Democratic National Committee?

(crickets)

What about one of the last two chairmen of the Republican National Committee?

(crickets gettin' louder)

Okay, who's your favorite NFL referee?

(sure are a lot o' crickets out for March)

The point is most of us can't name the chair of the DNC or RNC (or a NFL ref) because we don't care. It's a nice little entry on a resume, but not particularly important in the overall scheme of things.

Michael Steele calls waaaaaay too much attention to himself and for all the wrong reasons. He says dumb things and picks dumb fights. He is a major distraction in what should be a good year for Republicans.

Maybe this is all the fault of the Maryland voters. If they had elected him to the Senate in 2006 he'd be only out of 100 clowns instead of the top clown at the RNC. There he should have only one job: getting more Republicans elected. He seems to spend most of his time slapping on band-aids to his own self-inflicted wounds.

Steele can't even blame "the liberal media" for his troubles. When Tucker Carlson is dogging your ass, you really don't have a lot of friends on your side in Washington. Wonder where Carlson got the tip about the RNC's lavish spending on fancy hotels and bondage bars? A little insider information, mmmmmm?

When Steele got the gig some tongues wagged he was the "anti-Obama." He sure has been. As smooth and cool as Obama is, poor Mikey is clumsy, reactive and can't get out of his own way.

This may not be the last straw in Michael Steele's reign of error, but the accumulative effect could do him in. Nobody seems to be rushing to his defense (certainly not in the poll) and there's always plenty of warm bodies just waiting to fill the big chair.

I would have said "fill his shoes," but they're stuck in Steele's mouth. :Ssh:

You forgot the fourth option on the poll: Who?

Another shoe drops.WASHINGTON – The Republican National Committee has fired a staffer who helped organize a $1,946 visit last month to a sex-themed Hollywood club, and the GOP says it will recoup the money from a donor who also participated.

The episode is the latest in a string of questionable spending by the RNC as Republicans prepare for a costly election season in which they hope to take dozens of House and Senate seats from Democrats.

An RNC memo says the Jan. 31 outing to Voyeur West Hollywood involved several members of the "Young Eagles" GOP group who had been in Los Angeles for a meeting. An unnamed staffer, who had been warned that such activities did not qualify for reimbursement, has been fired, said the memo from RNC chief of staff Ken McKay.

The club features topless dancers and bondage outfits. It's meant to be "risque and provocative" and "a combination of intimidation and sexuality," one of its partners, David Koral, told the Los Angeles Times in October.
