I'm working on a contemporary novel in which several of the characters smoke a lot of pot. They're college age and early twenties, and I want to get the dialog right. I have my references from (gulp) over 15 years ago, but I'm not sure if the terminology still stands. For example, do people still use the expression: "wake-and-bake?" If not, is there a different colloquialism for getting stoned first thing in the morning? Thanks in advance.

One thing you need to keep in mind about drug slang, is that it can be very region-specific. What kids in Town A say might be different than kids in Town B. So, it's going to depend in part on where you set your story. (For work, I have a lot of experience talking to teen drug users, and even within my tiny state there's wide variation in slang.)

Good advice. As someone who graduated from a university where April 20 is smoke out day (hundreds of students gather in one spot on campus and light up at 4:20 in afternoon), I've heard lots of references. I also live in said university's town known for its tolerance of the activity. "Wake and bake" is still used widely and frequently here.

Thanks everyone!! W&B is really the only pot expression I was looking to use so far in my manuscript. I'll be back for more advice as things progress.

Wake and bake is still pretty popular today. I'll throw out some terminology and phrases and weird sayings for my area (Chicago and Central IL)

"Smoke trees til we look Vietnamese"
Smoking herb/grass/green/bud
"I call green(s)!" <--When you first load a bowl, calling greens means you get the first light/puff
Shotgun - blowing the inhaled smoke into someone else's mouth (can be done through a toilet paper tube)
Getting crunk(ed) (drunk and high)

You should probably familiarize yourself with different types of street marijuana and measurements and how people smoke it (bowls, bongs, hitters, humidifiers, "lungs").

20-sack - $20 worth
Schwag - low grade street marijuana, usually home grown and seedy
40's - like a step up from shwag
Higher grade marijuana like dank, dro, kush. Really good stuff that is "sticky".

Also, "breaking up" the smokeable part from the stem and removing the seeds (they pop/explode with heat), using a grinder to make it really fine, oh and some people suck/chew on the left over stem.

Also, when people are REALLY wanting pot and can't afford it, they get a razor blade or paper clip, scrap out the tar left over in their bowls or hitters, put it back in their chosen smoking device and smoke that to get left over THC (if any).

I knew some bad people in high school
