A few of the characters in the novel I'm working on are in this
business, so I want to place them in their settings with some accuracy.
Does anyone happen to know where I could get information about newspaper jobs (copy-boy and reporter and editor) in Canada from around 1900-1929? I am also interested in reporters from North America working in China in the 1920s. I have found material about ownership of the newspapers (corporate history) but not much about what the jobs were actually like for the editorial staff and what the offices look like (not the production rooms, the editorial rooms). Only one book so far, Newsworkers: toward a history of the rank and file / Hanno Hardt and Bonnie Brennen, editors, has been useful. The reporters' bios I've consulted haven't been that helpful; they are mostly memories of
covering special stories. I am looking for the day-to-day working conditions.
If anyone happens to know something about this area, I'd love to hear from you!
