For something I'm writing, I'd like to learn a little about dance music. Are there any artists that anyone particularly likes? A little bit darker is better than bouncier, but I'd be interested in any suggestions.
Thank you.

I'm old. All of the techno I've listened to was from the 1980s/early 90s.
Freestyle was an 80s techno/rollerskating-music "band." Don't Stop the Rock was one of their "hits."
Obviously Nine Inch Nails.
Maybe White Zombie.
I remember a darker techno/trance band called Bigod 20
In "Freddy Vs Jason" in the cornfield rave scene, and I believe the music playing is by Type O Negative.
In The Matrix, they played techno in the simulated fight scenes between Neo and Morpheus. It may have been by Prodigy, but I'm not sure.
Hope this helps.

This is an excellent guide:

Use Youtube to hear the whole tracks.
Electronic music tends not to be bands so much. The DJ's are more important. When people have gone to a party they comment on a "great set" rather than any particular artist appearing in that set.
Another problem is that genre names change a lot over time. "Jungle" and "break-beat" are arguably the same music, but from different years.
I've followed the development of electronic music back since I went to my first rave parties in the early nineties, and I've seen how techno has come to swallow up nearly every genre and music style. Today very little newly released music isn't technically techno.
The newest big trend on the scene is revival of the rap-rave. Hated by some loved by others.

I hope it helps.

Yep, Prodigy; Mindfields, if it's the song I'm remembering.
There's all kinds of different dance music. It's so broken into sub-catagories you could go on for days.
I'd suggest checking out EBM bands too. (earlier incantations would be Bigod20 as previously suggested. They were pioneers of the "dancier" industrial bands.)
Other bands in that genre to check out would be Front Line Assembly, Front 242, Skinny Puppy - for more current projects I'd suggest Assemblage 23, Covenant, VNV Nation.
