Do you feel uncomfortable when you come across an interview that devolves into a complete train wreck of awkward questions and fake smiles? The kind where hosts have no idea what they're talking about while guests have zero visible desire to be there, yet both parties are contractually obligated to trudge along no matter how cringe-inducing it all becomes. Well, if, like me, you can barely stand to watch such rich embarrassments, then have I got a magnificent clip for you.

This 8 minute long bit of talk show pain comes our way via the MTV UK show Hanging Out circa the end of 1996. The cast of Star Trek: First Contact had stopped by to promote their new film, however, the show's two hosts were not only ill equipped to talk Trek, but seemed barely capable of forming words. Marina Sirtis, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, and Brent Spiner (who is constantly addressed as Data) all do their best to save face despite the hosts increasing number of blunders but there was no saving the interview. Things start off rough but salvageable with the female host, Simone, confusing who is who, but if name and character mix-ups were the only problem here, it wouldn't be worth talking about, now would it?

Nope, things just keep getting worse and worse until the whole show turns into a massive face palm. And if you think, like Simone clearly does, that outsourcing the questions to off-screen callers is going to ease the tension in the room, you're in for a treat.

Enjoy. Assuming you can stand to watch the whole thing, that is.

This reminded me of an interview I saw. Think it was at DragonCon a few years back. An actor from a popular TV series was being interviewed in front of an audience on stage. It was pretty obvious the interviewer hadn't done any research on the actor--or hadn't even bothered to come up with stock questions (what's your favorite role; what types of acting do you like to do, etc.). He answered the questions, but they weren't the kind of questions that lent themselves to lengthy answers. The interviewer ran out of questions before time ran out, and he suddenly had a problem. So he started asking the actor what he thought of other actors. The actor had to say things like he didn't know that person, and after a couple of those questions, he said he needed to use the bathroom. The biggest laugh came when someone in the audience suggested he take a shortcut by going through the ventilating shaft--someone who had watched the TV series!

It burns. And not in the good way.

"That's LIEUTENANT COMMANDER Data to you."

Without even going to the link (yet), I can imagine the actors falling into character, telling "inside" jokes that only they (and the viewing audience) would get. From the interviewee perspective, I'm thinking once you get that the interviewer isn't fully competent, you might as well take over the interview and give the audience some good entertainment. I recall seeing some improv show several decades ago, surely these professional actors would have some applicable experience.

"No, there's no problem. I'm fully functional, Levar. < tick > Fully functional, Levar. < tick > Fully functional, Levar. < tick > ..."

There's this infamous 2002 "Fresh Air with Terry Gross" interview with Gene Simmons. Terry has interviewed an amazing number of celebrities over the decades, asking obviously thoughtful questions, having apparently followed their careers as well as reading their books, seeing the movies they starred in, etc. I've heard many of them, and I never heard her "lose control" or be in any way nearly so flustered as happened with Gene. Lack of knowledge and research was again NOT the problem with this interview, but apparently Terry was unaccustomed to and not expecting Gene Simmons' arrogance and uh, grossness.

One of the most memorable exchanges was (from my memory):

Gross: "Why do you wear a codpiece?"

Simmons: "Because my manhood would be too much for you."

John Stewart had a similar interview recently, promoting a movie he clearly hadn't watched... The actor, who I don't remember off hand, was very cool about it, and they joked about how bad the interview was because of his lack of prep.

Hugh Grant for 'Did You Hear About the Morgans?'

The Stewart interview wasn't painful at all. The Star Trek one requires protective clothing to be worn to view it at length.

And even that may not help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juFZh92MUOY
