It's been snowing intermittently here since yesterday, I think. School was closed today and tomorrow. I had a debate (I hesitate to say argument; that sounds so hostile) with my stepson about the schools being closed tomorrow.
I asked, "How do you know? Is there an official announcement from the school system?"
"Everybody on MySpace is saying it."
"That's not an official announcement. That's just gossip."
"No, everybody on my space says it."
"Do NOT trust sites that are filled with speculation, wishful thinking, and 'everybody knows' stuff. You must have an official verification. Anybody can say whatever they want online."
"But everybody's saying it."
"Everybody who?"
"All my friends on MySpace."
"Well, we all know how reliable MySpace is. I wonder that the government doesn't make it an official news outlet."
He finally went to the school board site and found that, yes, the schools are closed tomorrow.
I said, "Fine. Now you have verification from an official source."
Sometimes I worry about kids who grow up with the Internet as their 'Ultimate truth' source.
