I happen to like here, thank you very much, and you will note the bill DIED.
Yes, I did note that the bill DIED. It was just a random question. Not a vicious and wicked attack on the state.

Hope Neil Young will remember
Southern Man don't need him around, anyhow

Hope Neil Young will remember
Southern Man don't need him around, anyhowCan't stand that song. Always struck me as a particularly peurile way to respond to Neil Young's musical critique of racism. "You don't like the way we treat our n-----rs? Well, who needs you, anyway?" Yeesh.
Everytime cover bands play that song, they yell, "Who all here is from da SOUTH?!" and I always want to go, "Well, me, but not like that..."

i think skynard responded to neil individually for his broad-stroke against the categorical "southern man".

"Southern Man you'd better cool your head .........don't forget what the good book said................."
Here in Mississippi - it took me quite some time to get used to all the LYNARD skynard play on the radio. It's excessive. I was from Vegas ..............and was used to bigger city radio with the funny, celebrity DJ's...........and I listened to Howard Stern most mornings on my drive to work.
Then I moved down here and it was "John Boy & Billy in the morning." Or, "THE BIG SHOW." Big city not. (I realize those are syndicated radio shows ......you should hear the local stations.)
Locals listened to their radios at their desks, while I stomped around, trying not to get mad. How many times in one day can you listen to FREE BIRD?
"Play that Molly Hatchett song one more time ......and I'll ............"
38 Special I can deal with - and I even have a VEGAS memory of them ........one time the band was playing blackjack at the table I was cocktailing (all day) but I didn't know who they were. They were playing that night - a free concert out on FREMONT street - and it was almost time for the show to start. I ask them "you guys aren't watching the concert at 7?"
They all tried not to laugh. "Whose playing?" One asked.
"38 Special." I answered.
"We can't miss it, Pam." One said ......starting to get up.
"We ARE 38 Special."

Once, cause then it's night time.
Yes .....those dueling guitars sure do go on about it.
(dual?)
The only Lynard Skynard song I find ok is "simple kind of man."

You don't like "Gimme Three Steps"????
BTW, I like Skynard, but I worship (not really) Neil Young. As William said, Skynard's attack on Neil always seemed to me to be a criticism on the over-generalization of the "Southern Man." In Neil's defense, however, I think he never meant it that way, though this was not to clear to the typical listener.
For me, "Cowgirl in the Sand" is every bit the ballad "Free Bird" is; I don't find Neil that far removed from Southern rock. Example: "Old Man," it hits alot of typically "Southern" or "Country" themes right on the head.

Sure , it's ok. And, "Whats your name?"
(little girl, what's your name?)
My late brother, a guitar player, also loved Neil Young. (And, coincidently, also named Neil.)
I'm not cool enough for Neil Young .....kind of like Lou Reed or The Grateful Dead, I'm just not hip enough.
My brother also loved Pink Floyd - and I agree with him. In fact, after he was killed, his band had a tribute concert, and played "Wish you were here." by Pink Floyd. 10 years later, almost, I cannot listen to that song without crying.

How can someone disgusted by the actions of their own race be bigoted? Do I believe that someone else is superior to me, because I'm white?
Because your statement assumes that all white male conservatives are responsible for the problems of the world.
And as a right-wing Christian I have to take offence to the bigoted remark of my people.
Hey, do what you want outside the Church. Christianity is about *not* being a part of worldly things.

Seriously- if we banned all books written by people living unacceptable lifestyles or with characters living unacceptable lifestyles- what would be left?
And the bible would be the first to go. You dont even get past half of genesis without a chick getting her dad drunk so she can have sex with him.

I think the legislators should be targeting the real menace: authors who take or write about mind altering substances. How many kids today have been lead down the path of addiction by reading Coleridge in English lit?
ETA: I just realized how old this thread is. I'm going to be totally confused by all the bumping.

Um, the thread is dead--over a year ago. Why bump it? Start a new one on something happening now, instead.

Ultimately the funny part of it was that Ronnie Van Zant wound up being quite good friends with Ol' Neil.

Where might it stop? Alcohol's a mind altering substance. Have you read 'Trainspotting'? Welsh waxes orgasmically on the highs of heroin, but he also leaves one in no doubt that it's a road to the worst hell imagineable. Shouldn't kids be given both sides, while encouraged and trusted to make the right choices? Legislating against something can often be the easy way out, a surrender of collective responsibility. And many personal freedoms and choices, once forfeited, are gone forever.

And many personal freedoms and choices, once forfeited, are gone forever. Don't you realize that kids will simply imitate what they read? It's not just drugs and alcohol (thank you for pointing that out) - it's the bad behavior too. How many more delinquents do we need before Tom Sawyer is removed from school libraries? Won't anyone think of the children?
(Actually, I largely agree with you. I probably should be using the [sarcasm] tag where appropriate. I thought my reference to Coleridge would give it away, but clearly not. :))

Why bump it?I bumped it. Jenna said she was gonna clear out all TIO and OP threads over a year old and I thought there was some good stuff in this one. So I bumped it and asked Mac to move it to the new Politics board. We need a firm base on which to build.
You got a problem with that? :D

I'm guilty as charged. I suppose you might say I pulled a Housman on your Coleridge to suit my own ends.

What is this cretin going to do with the Bible and the story of ol' Onan spilling his seed? According to the article, certain "classics" like Shakespeare would have been exempt. The Bible would probably also qualify as a "classic".

It wouldn't be the first time someone south of the Mason-Dixon line was prejudice about, like, say...(The remainder of this message has been replaced by nice-o- matic with, (see emancipation proclamation).

YEah, because no one north of the mason dixon line is prejudice. You should think before you post, becuase some of us LIVE HERE. Besides, this thread is a year old, and I think Rob bumped it up becuase of the various topics which were discussed, some of which you might actually want to read before commenting.
