Bernie Madoff was admitted to Duke University Hospital last Friday suffering serious injuries consistent with assault, according to ABC News (http://www.nypost.com/t/ABC_News).
Sources disclosed to the ABC affiliate in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina that the convicted fraudster had broken ribs, a collapsed lung and facial fractures.

Who here is happy that ( or believes its some sort of justice ), a 71 year old cancer sufferer got the snot beat out of him?

Hmm, let's see -- prisoner, cancer, beating victim.

"happy"?

Nope. Not so much.

Best wishes of the season, sulong.

Thats very cool. I see this the same way. I was surprised to see elsewhere, how cruel and vengeful others could be.

Although, judging from the number of responses here so far, this topic may still be too sensitive to comment on. Least ways during the season.

Happy holidays

I think the man is disease free, but assuredly he's not having an easy time of it. He shouldn't have been assaulted. I hold the prison guards accountable. . . .

Yeah. Not happy at all. It doesn't take a hero to beat up an old man--who is already behind bars for what he's done.

Blaming the "Man," huh? Understaffed, overworked prison guards? So the prisoners who did this are blameless?

It has nothing to do with the assaulters being blameless. It has to do with the prison guards not doing their job which is to protect prisoners from violence. That's their job; they can't do it?? Find those that are alert and diligent that can. . . .

I honestly don't think it's possible to protect any prisoner in any prison from violence, no matter how alert and diligent the guards may be. If Madoff had preferential treatment that kept him separated from the general population because of who he is, a whole bunch of people would have had their panties in a bunch because of that.

Bernie Madoff's lawyer, Ira Sorkin, says his client was hospitalized due to dizziness and high blood pressure.

Now, the source says Madoff was not attacked in prison, but that he fell off a bed onto his face.

Reports of an assault haven't even been confirmed. Can we lay off the blame game until they are, at least?

I have no patience with that kind of excuse, Haggis. He's an old man and they have to know he'd be a target. Now, lax is lax; lazy is lazy. Prisoners need to be observed and escorted when need be from Pt . A to Pt. B. That's not asking too much. . . .

Wait a minute. Dogs don't have retractable claws. What am I saying?

I think yours does. The only thing it doesn't have is retractable hideousness, albeit I'm almost proved wrong by that avatar.

Merry Christmas, mean little dog. . . and of course Haggis. . . .

Edit: all right, I am proved wrong. . . .

This is horrible, and no, he did not "fall off a bed."

Bull shit. I hope he sues the prison and the state.

According to a report by the Associated Press, Madoff's lawyer - Ira Sorkin - said his client was not assaulted, but "had some dizzy spells and some high blood pressure."

Interesting that his lawyer, of all people, would claim he wasn't assaulted.

Reports are claiming Madoff had a dizzy spell in the middle of the night, sat up, then fell off his bed, which is some distance off the floor.

Who knows what really happened. If he was assaulted, it is shameful.

That's some dizzy spell. Fall off your bed hard enough to break ribs and and collapse your lung.

Maybe he was on the top bunk. That would do it.

hmm, top bunk, crack some ribs, ribs collapse the lung. Possible I guess.

protect prisoners from violence. That's their job;

While I agree that this is an important thing. It's not job one in a prison.

ETA: Maybe it's a conspiracy? He got attacked by an accomplice of the lady that got to the Pope?

Its also important, I think, to remember that no one has said he was assaulted. All that has been said in that vein is he had injuries that are consistent with an assault.

In fact, everyone involved has denied any assault took place, including people who should be on Madoff's side.

Yeah - I would expect his lawyer would be raising holy hell and demanding protective custody, if he'd had even a whiff of an assault.
