I've been poking around in this forum for a while now and thought I would take a moment to introduce myself. Being a nude, fetish, and erotic model, I'm a little bit sensitive about how I am viewed by other people, but also very interested in hearing what you all have to say. When I do videos, it's interesting to see the scripts our clients write for us, and the ideas they come up with.

But enough about me...if you have a minute, please say hello and tell me a bit about what brings you here, what you write, etc.

My name is scarletpeaches and I write erotica because...

I find it incredibly easy. Now of course, 'easy to write' shouldn't be as high on our list of priorities as 'easy to read' but it's a good start.

After hours of MSN conversations with tt42 about how bad so much erotica is, and how so many writers fail on the details, I realised this is my genre. Instead of railing against authors trying so hard to be explicit they forget to be sensual and sexy, I should shurrup and get on with it myself.

And show them how it's done!

Sex is such an important part of life; I want to do my part to show that. Call it a crusade if you life; there's too much shame and embarrassment and 'tee hee, she writes dirty books' in this game.

I want to do away with that.

That is very interesting. I do understand completely what you mean by this. So often when I read sex scenes in novels, I'm amazed at how incredibly dull I find them to be. I end up thinking, "this should be the best part, but intead, I just want to skip over it. Why is that?" I do think that many writers do, as you say, try so hard to be explicit that they can't make the scene unique. If it were taken out, it wouldn't result in any change in plot or character development. It leaves me scratching my head, and saying, "Okay, I'm an adult, and I know how it works. You don't need to explain it to me. Okay, thanks."

My take on scenes like that, Celia, is like any scene in any novel--if it doesn't need to be there to illuminate character or advance the plot, why is it there at all?

I no longer remember which Jonathan Kellerman novel it was, but there was a scene in which he was bopping 'the other twin,' unknown to him. Until the anilingus, anyway. It was kind of hot, for Kellerman, but served the plot. It made the character suspect something was not right, and as I recall, that's how he learned a twin existed.

Other end of the spectrum: Again I don't know which novel, but James Patterson's snake and the milk enema was just creepy, a scene designed to titillate but not really serving the story. (One more reason to stop reading him, like I didn't have enough.) He could have found many other ways to say the bad guy holding these young women was seriously fucked up, but he chose something not only way weird to most readers, but way over the top. I can't help but wonder if it aroused him.

To me, that's the difference between porn and erotica. In erotica, if all the sex scenes were replaced with "and they had great sex," you'd still have a pretty good story, albeit shorter.

When I was younger, I use to read horror novels, because they had all the great sex scenes.

Also, I remember this one thriller--about a cargo ship loaded with a nuke, headed into NY harbor--that had awesome sex scenes. There was this large breasted native american chick--one of the bad guys--that got off pinching the guy's nipples during sex. Really, it was excellent.

I like books like that. Is that what you mean?
