Some of us have web or home pages but don't show them in our signatures.

The following prompted me to add mine, since I'd like for the powers that be to see the page. You might want to do the same.

It's from a computer guru friend of mine who knows about everything there is to know about computers. He's a Shell User and MSMVP and Joe's counterpart on his (computer) forum (www.AumHa.com (http://www.AumHa.com)):

My question to him:

When a browers crawls the web, does that mean it crawls its own, or does it look at others?

In other words, will the spider grab my page off other search engines, or just mine?

His reply:

What happens is that Google and other search engines have special software that goes out and crawls all over the web and bring back information to the Google servers. You may notice on the forum that are usually a lot of guests showing. Quite a few of those guests are search engine spiders crawling around and gathering data. They will do the same, eventually, to your page.

Links to your site on other pages, such as a post you make with your site address, count as a reference to that page. The more reference the spiders find the more relevance (figured out by a magic formula know only to the specific search engine) your site gets and the more up the page it comes when the search isn’t exact.

Once your site is indexed by the search engine then searching for something that is unique to your site, for example your name and Winterchase, will make your site shoot to the top. A less demanding search, say scripts, will bury you in the gazillion hits the search finds.

How’s that?
