Actually, they were able to get some level of DNA from the skull that contained only female genetic markers. This story was featured on a History Channel program a week or so ago.

The history of these bones is pretty convoluted anyhow. Burned, buried, disinterred, burned again, lather, rinse repeat. I gather there has always been some doubt whether the skull fragment was actually Hitler's. Does anyone know what happened to the jaw fragment, the one whose dental work supposedly matched Hitler's? Although I've also heard that they didn't really have Hitler's dental records and were going on what people could tell them about his teeth.

Instead, they point to dental records as confirmation that Hitler killed himself.
Some historians have believed for years that the Nazi dictator did not die in Berlin.

I've known about those rumours...well, almost all my life. Never sure what to make of them. There are some people who are surrounded by conspiracy theories; they always will be. There are people out there who don't want him to be dead and can't accept that.

Two things.
A pre-planned easily implimented escape route to South America all laid out.
No physical evidence to bring back. The body was burned several times from what I understand.

Conspiracy theorists, however, have always maintained that it was staged, mostly because in obedience to Hitler's orders, the remaining people burned his corpse to keep it from being displayed.

Exactly. Until somebody comes up with something that exceeds this Occam's Razor observation, I'm not much listening to the "Hitler survived" stuff. After thirty years or more, there simply was no reason for anyone to lie or provide cover for anything. Even Martin Bormann, who was long reputed to have escaped, is now pretty clearly believed to have committed suicide, similar to Himmler and Goebbels, when the schidt hit the pfann. Of the major Nazi figures, or even the second-tier ones, there remains only one real mystery: Alois Brunner, who allegedly managed to flee to Syria and live out his life in obscurity. He'd be a centenarian by now, and it is very unlikely he's been breathing for a couple of decades. The only real biggie who did ultimately escape legal judgment was Dr. Joseph Mengele, who we now know lived out his life in quietude in Brazil, before drowning (possible heart attack) while swimming in the ocean.
