I thought it was illegal for the military to get involved in civilian operations.

No, remember, if the government does it, it's not illegal.

National Guard was called out by the Governor (http://www.wpxi.com/politics/20710486/detail.html) to support security for the event.

Of course, from that clip, we don't know that an arrest was made, or if that was even Guardsmen who picked up the kid. OR if protesting had anything to do with why he was picked up. ETA: Or that the guy they picked up was a protester. (Yeah, I'm in writing mode.)

Ok, so they do have the authority.

It just looks weird

What Diana said. Zoombieized.

(I'd like to claim credit for that word. I'm sure we can all define it by now.

Zoombieized: expanded with additional colorful and humorous commentary, generally including reference to drugs, boobs, guns, or the transhumanist future):D

Also, can anyone explain why protesting the various economic control schemes are generally seen as a progressive activity? Are no conservatives upset at the thought of a planned economy anymore, or is it just that it slips under their radar because it's not called a planned economy?

Can't answer that one, but not all of the protesting is in regards to the economy, except perhaps peripherally (like the protesters protesting against the war in Iraq.)

Because FOX News isn't organizing one?

Because many conservatives are in favor of a planned economy. As long as it's the business community that's doing the planning.

I don't draw the parallel between Marxists and the revolutionaries masquerading as conservatives because it tickles my funny bone.

Although it does that too. ;)

I believe the proper terminology is Zoombified.

I think that's when Zoombie's pointing it at some one, or has been drinking. Not sure which. Both?

Bingo. As the cliche goes, socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor. Or its cognate -- socialize the risk, privatize the gains.

I just found out that a friend of mine was bashed in the back of the head with a bottle thrown by one of these "protesters" and his wallet taken.

I call them "cowardly thugs".

Grr.

Judging from the clip, I suspect his being whisked away might have had something to do with the smoke bombs. I suspect he was seen as throwing a smoke bomb or whatever is causing the smoke in the clip.

Just a guess on my part, but that would explain why he was where he was (within throwing distance and prominently up front) and why he was singled out.

Um, where are their covers? Where are their weapons? Why is one in black boots and the other in deserts? MultiCams and old school BDU's? Really? Doesn't look like military to me. Looks like a nice show, but no dice.

There also appears to be no unit patches. And the one gentleman doesn't have his trousers bloused.

My friend Sam could look more convincing, and he's 100 pounds overweight and a bizarre amalgamation of Ayn Rand and a Canadian.

He apologizes while he ignores your cries for help?
