I think I've got most of you linked on my blog--spent a good part of the night adding stuff to the template. I actually am slowly gaining a not-terrible google ranking.
I have Kira, Joanne, Becky, Anne, Allison (sthrnwriter)--but if I've missed someone who would like a link, give me a shout. :) The sidebar is starting to fill up, but there's still some room.

Awwww. I'm being silly ;)
And it's open to all, now.
I had it friends only to comment back ages ago for other reasons, but that's all changed.
And darned if I didn't forget that I had it that way, until I was doing some clean-up, and stuff >.<;;
And the "Shadow Walking" journal is open, too.
I just ask that anyone who comments, please let me know who you are, so I can say "Thank you" :D

Yeah--link me up, Nique! I'll put your link up on mine later today.
Thanks Mac - but you don't have to if you don't want to. Some people in the past have complained about some of the material being too risque and naughty (that material has been removed, but it still could happen - I have that kind of mind). So, give it a goosey, but if you feel its a bit too raunchy or disgusting then I won't take it personally.

We be writers here. It's kinda hard to offend some of us that easily! Besides, it's -your- blog. There's no reason you should have to remove anything from it, unless -you- want to.

Well, I didn't want to post here yet because I'm in the midst of making some changes, but currently my blog is located at:
http://juliawrites.blogspot.com
I've already link quite a few of you there, but I always have room for more. I'm going to be weeding through the extra links that I have and don't use, as I add more people.
I am considering moving it to my personal website (which is in the making -- I'll post the link when it's ready so you may link to it as well), and using WordPress instead of Blogger/BlogSpot.
Does anyone have any experience with WordPress that they'd like to share? I've got a few specific reasons why I'm interested in using it, but I may test it out against BlogSpot for a little while, to compare them both.
MacAllister
07-21-2005, 09:18 PM
Nique--yeah! What Lorrie said. :) I've put a link up to you, in my sidebar.
l.Stormgaye--do you have a personal site or blog? That's what we're linking up. :) If not, then get ON it, woman!
Julia, I don't have any experience with WordPress, beyond wanting to leave someone a comment, not long ago, and being annoyed that I had to register to do so. Blogspot has eliminated that requirement. Also, if you know enough CSS and html to tinker with your own template, it's really flexible to use.

Thanks Mac! I know what you mean about registering to comment. I've read up on it, and apparently it's an option that you can set. I know someone who had the register option on, and I couldn't comment (along with many others), so she took it off, and now anyone can comment.
I like it because people can leave their e-mail addresses (and no one else can see them save for the one whose blog it is), which makes it easier to respond to comments. I'm never sure whether to respond to a comment within the comment thread, on another post, or on the commenter's blog itself, because I don't know if that person will return and see the comment. I know I can use Haloscan to get the "leave your e-mail" option, but I don't like that Haloscan is a separate entity, and if something should happen to it, I'd probably lose my comments. Also, I've tried adding Haloscan, but I can't figure out how to add the older comments from BlogSpot. Apparently there is a way to do so, but I can't see to find it.
One other thing I like about WordPress: I can have password-protected entries in case I ever want to share something with only a few friends. But then again, that's what my LiveJournal and Xanga are for, I suppose. ;)
So, I may just keep BlogSpot for now. Someone left a helpful comment on it last night concerning how BlogSpot is easier if you want to build up a readership. I suppose it's not as easy with WordPress because it's not on the BlogSpot network. However, most of my visits are coming from other people's blogs who have me listed, and from my posts here.
Anyway, I'll definitely give it some thought before I jump into anything. Maybe just a change of colors on my BlogSpot would help. :)

Anyway, thanks to you and Lorrie.

That's really not accurate; both Blogspot and WordPress--and pretty much any other blogging system--rely on pinging the same server systems when there's an update--and those systems have really not been effective for a couple of years.
The real key is Content, regularly updated, which means Google and other search engines will find you--links--which will bring new traffic--and, perhaps most important of all these days, supporting web services for "feeds," whether Atom or RSS or xml.

I think Blogspot gives me the option of Atom, but i have no idea what they are talking about.

Hi Mac et al -
I think you've got my website URL on yours (www.jillmillerzimon.com (http://www.jillmillerzimon.com)) because my host indicates hits from your site (!).
I just started a blog - www.writeslikeshetalks.blogspot.com (http://www.writeslikeshetalks.blogspot.com) - if you're still adding. But don't want to be greedy. :)
Thanks.

Thanks Nique - you know, I haven't decided whether or not to include a list of links on the sidebar. The fellow local journalists I know who've been blogging for a year or more keep it simple and have actually deleted their blogroll. So...to be honest, I'm not sure what to do. I totally understand if you don't link me now. If I do decide to do links, I'll let you know!

You know how, once you've found a blog or news site you really like, you have to remember to keep checking to see if there's a new post?
"Feeds," or "syndication," or "RSS" or "Atom" (and other protocols) allow a user to "subscribe" to a feed either through a special web site, like my.yahoo.com, or bloglines.com, or a special piece of software, called a "news reader" or "aggregator"--Ampheta Desk, or NewzCrawler for Windows, NetNewsWire, and others, for Mac. Some web browsers--like FireFox or Safari--support RSS/Feeds.
If you subscribe to a feed you either go to a single web site, or open your aggregator, and it tells you what sites have been updated, and in some cases, fetches the new posts for you to read. It's more efficient, and far more agreeable for the reader than checking a bunch of blogs.
RSS/ATOM/XML are just different ways of providing a feed; just check off one or more in Blogger and you're good to go.

I have a question for bloggers -
how do i put pictures on the profile?
I took some funky black and whites last night and think i will fancy a couple.
and how do I put a pic next to my blog-title, so that people see a big pic in the background when they go on my blog?
Any help is much appreciated,
