I've always enjoyed illustrations found in some novels, usually capricious little books like Breakfast of Champions or ... help me out, mind drawing a blank, but I know you've all seen them ---
My question is, if I bothered to put in a few small pictures, would it be a complete waste of time? Would an editor not take the work with a bit of seriousness if he or she saw them? I'm not writing a fantasy or sci-fi, the two genres where I can see this getting out of hand (author draws a picture of a dragon... we all know what a dragon looks like. author draws space ship... we all know what a spaceship looks like).
I'm working on something that, at least from my perspective, works better with a few graphs (like in Curious Incident of the Dog at Night). I'm a well above average artist.
So, my question -
If I include them, am I hindering my own cause? I'm going to make them in any case, should it be for just my benefit?
