President Obama said Thursday he will bestow the nation's highest civilian honor on slain San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, making him the first openly gay civil rights leader to receive the award and drawing praise from activists who have criticized Obama for shortchanging their cause.meanwhile...
Citing "pressure'' from the Obama administration and other members of Congress, U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings has withdrawn an amendment that aimed to weaken the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell'' policy that bans gays and lesbians from openly serving in the military.
Hastings, D-Miramar, wanted to add language to a defense appropriations bill to prohibit spending money to investigate or discharge members of the military who reveal they are homosexual or bisexual.
But "due to pressure from some of my congressional colleagues and from the White House, I have withdrawn my amendment,'' a Hastings said in a statement released Tuesday.

I guess if you have to ride in the back of the bus, it's nice to have some pretty medals and a pat on the head as thanks for staying in your place.

That is weak. I don't understand this. Why won't he extend the smallest effort towards rectifying DADT? Medals for Milk is fine, but it doesn't do anything for anyone right now. And it doesn't work to say he hasn't the time to deal with it if he (meaning his administration) has got the time to nip the buds of any progress to fence it in a little.
I have to say, I simply don't get it.

once you all have a beer in hand, how about you all raise a toast to talented and qualified people losing their livelihoods because of their sexual orientations?

I'll drink to that, and I'll still have another hand free to do this (http://www.adayinhand.com/).

As I said months ago, Obama could be opposing anything less than total legislative revocation of DADT. It's possible Congress would like to settle for something that weakens DADT but doesn't get rid of it.
On the other hand, Obama could just as easily be a homophobe and/or bigot. It's hard to tell just looking at his actions.
