Getting Your Subconscious to Talk to You

I know I want to write a novel, I know it will be a sociological sff romance because that's what I like to read and daydream about, but I am having trouble figuring out exactly what I would most like to write about. Anybody know a brainstorming exercise designed to pull your subconscious desires out where your conscious mind can look at them?

Anybody know a brainstorming exercise designed to pull your subconscious desires out where your conscious mind can look at them?

Take a pad and paper with you EVERYWHERE. Watch people, watch nature and write down your observations. Once you feel that you have a thread going in your idea journal, write five pages. If you are still interested, plot away.
