Although it's helpful, I think it's more essential that a song can be sung to somewhat of a repetitive rhythm...

If you listen to songs. most of them don't rhyme, I don't think the songs that rhyme are neccassary better. the beat of the song is what makes a song good!

I had an idea about this, hope it helps answer the question.There are a great many lyric sites on the internet. You can look up songs similar to the kind you write and see whether rhyme is important to these or not.
