Readings are a widespread poetry feature and I think there are readings of prose, too.

Regarding prose, would that be considered "published"?

Curious. Hope it's not a silly q :)

 If by "reading" you mean that the author of the work is sitting in front of a group of people who are listening to a verbal account of the work, then no. Readings of prose, in the strict sense, are promotional tools intended to interest people in an upcoming book or a forthcoming book.

For poetry, a reading is like an art gallery showing. You're "displaying" your wares, but the listeners can only take home the memory, rather than the product, so it doesn't qualify as "published."

While the word "publish" does include the verbal dissemination of literature, it's generally accepted that the person who is the receiver of the information should be able to possess the literature after the reader has left.

But a nice try! :D
