It's about a girl with OCD (which usually garners the response, "Oh, you too?")

http://www.myspace.com/crissajean

It was sold at auction to HarperCollins. But it won't be out for a long time. So I'm clockking the progress online. Still haven't received the dreaded editor's letter, though we had a nice chat in nyc.

Auction and Harper-Collins? Well, 2 (TWO) BIG pts for you.

Auctioned (saying that it has a serious intrinsic intial value) and the publishing house of HC, too. I hope I'm not mistaken on those two pts I "recognized".

Auctioning: An agent (note: this is agent territory -- don't try this at home, kids) calls up various publishers who she thinks might be interested in a certain book, and says "I have a hot property here. If you want to be in on the action, give me an offer by next Thursday, eh?"

The editors take the manuscript, read it, and start figuring their sales numbers and break-even points. One of them offers on the book. The agent calls the other publishers and says, "I've got an offer of $..... from XXXXX. Think you can beat it?" Some other publisher thinks, "I can offer twice that and still make a profit...." and offers half-again as much. The agent calls the other publishers and says, "$..... is on the table. Anyone think they can beat that?" and so on. Comes a week from Thursday, the agent presents the author with the best offer ("best" may not only be in terms of dollar advance, but in terms of other contract clauses).

That's an auction, and it's exciting to be the author.

What is OCD?

First, Big Happy Congrats to Crissa!!! This is fantastic news and as you can see, we're all excited for you. Can't wait to read it.

Vomaxx, OCD is Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder. I'm no shrink, but I know it manifests itself in all sorts of ways--everything from obsessive organizational tendencies to hand-washing to combing the fringe on your rug--and I mean so obsessively that you can't bear not to do it. It can show up as some pretty bizarre routines. It's a fascinating subject and I can't wait to read Crissa's book.

Well done! Well done! You are now entitled to walk around with a big grin for at least as long as it took to write the book.

Given the auction, it sounds like the actual sale came pretty quickly. Did it take a long time to get an agent to take it on?

hmmmm.. this tirdbit, from her blog, rings very true in my ears:

I'm used to receiving rejection letters. I've piled them up since I began selling my short stories to lit magazines as a teen. But the rejections that I've received from editors in publishing houses have sounded downright weird. Instead of commenting on my plot or character development, they only seemed concerned with whether they could sell the thing or not. Or whether it was "marketable." Or whether books like mine had been sold before. They want something new. But they want something familiar. Most of the time, they don't know what they want.
