LONDON – Millvina Dean, who as a baby was wrapped in a sack and lowered into a lifeboat in the frigid North Atlantic, died Sunday, having been the last survivor of 1912 sinking of the RMS Titanic.

The earth continues to revolve around the sun. We'll always have such moments of passage. We have to be very near to the passing of the last surviving WWI vet, as a case in point. I'm old enough to remember, as a child of eight or so, the news of the death of the last surviving American Civil War vet. These kinds of things always provoke some nostalgic angst. And they should.

My great aunt won two tickets for the maiden voyage on the Titanic. When she heard what they were saying about it, she refused to go and refused to sell the tickets to anyone. I don't know where they are now, but she kept them in her purse in a sealed bag to remind herself just how precious her life was that she had somehow avoided that catastrophe. I'm sure those tickets would be a lot more now than they were back then. I think her kids have them.

As far back as I can remember, I've been fascinated by the Titanic. May she and all her passengers now rest in peace.
