BEIJING — Chen Fuchao, a man heavily in debt, had been contemplating suicide on a bridge in southern China for hours when a passer-by came up, shook his hand — and pushed him off the ledge.

Chen fell 26 feet onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion laid out by authorities and survived, suffering spine and elbow injuries, the official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday.

The passer-by, 66-year-old Lai Jiansheng, had been fed up with what he called Chen's "selfish activity," Xinhua said. Traffic around the Haizhu bridge in the city of Guangzhou had been backed up for five hours and police had cordoned off the area.

Well, that sounds like a better alternative than calling in Lon Horiuchi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lon_Horiuchi). :D

I always wonder about suicide survivors living with their misery and additional injuries (physical and mental) from the aborted attempt. More misery, a new lease on life, or a combination thereof?

I think it maybe depends on whether it was a genuine attempt or a cry for help. Either way, I'm sure they're offered all the help they want or need, but there will always be some who are serious and will just keep going until the succeed regardless of any intervention.

I had a friend who downed a bottle of pills with a vodka chaser, and then phoned everyone to tell them what she'd done. It's astonishingly selfish, but I don't think suicidal people have the emotional capacity to think of others. The man in China may not have been aware of the chaos he was causing, and if he was he probably didn't care. Some bullies in the UK were prosecuted for goading a suicidal boy into jumping; I think the charge was reckless endangerment or something similar. I don't know what'll happen to the man who pushed him, but if it's a crime under their laws then he'll be dealt with extremely severely. They don't mess about in China.

When I saw this headline, I thought. "How sick."

Then I read the story and and thought. "Hmm, I can see that..."

I'm sorry Rug but my sick sense of humor has gotten the better of me with this one. I immediately started thinking about that old Buddy Hackett joke, "Can you imagine, there are only 10 yellowbellied red crested sap sucker birds left in the whole world, 10!!!!! Only 10!!!! that's amazing, yeah...... One shits on my car there will be 9...

I'm in a hurry to get across that bridge and there's a guy in my way threatening to jump,, fuck you here's some help.......

I know, I'm so bad.......

This is one of those sick things that I can't help laughing about. It's horrible that this happened to this guy but at the same time it's something you would expect to see in a movie, most likely a comedy, and not real life.

If he was really serious about committing suicide, why didn't he go somewhere else to do it, instead of a place where eleven other people have recently tried to jump?

Maybe being pushed off (onto an inflatable cushion, mind you) helped this man realize that he wasn't as serious about death as he thought he was.

One can only hope.

When I lived in MD the Key Bridge(I think it was the bridge) was shut down for HOURS in the hot MD sun. It was summertime and people actually ran out of gas because someone wanted to jump but didn't.

People were so upset that they started to chant "jump" just to move things along.

Dunno if the person jumped but I do know that after that they made sure to keep traffic far far away from the location of any future jumpers.

I can see how people would be annoyed and frustrated.

I am so going to Hell.

Save me a seat.

I have oodles of sympathy for people who want help.

None for attention-seekers.

Which is ironic, given what a drama queen I am.

You know, if you don't think to long about the depressing permanence of death....

...a lot of sh*t that goes on is really pretty damn funny.

Admittedly, I laughed when I read it. But then, I understand impatience, especially in traffic.

I laughed. The pushing thing sounded like something my mother would do.

Bet he didn't think he'd run into an even crazier dude up there on that ledge, eh?

It's a horrible story, of course, but the irony is astounding. Stranger than fiction, I tell you!
