If I post a piece of my own unpublished writing on my website, have I thereby prevented anyone else, such as a market, from buying the first right to publish the same piece?

If you publish the bulk of the piece, yes. You've given up first electronic and, I think, FNAR.

But I might be wrong.

You can't post the whole thing in its final form, but an excerpt (like a chapter's worth) should be Okay.
