LONDON, England (AP) -- The British Fertility Society is warning that the UK is facing a shortage of men willing to donate their sperm.
Fertility clinics are struggling to recruit donors, have long waiting lists and high costs. In some parts of the country, there are no clinics at all.
The warning comes Wednesday in the British Medical Journal from Mark Hamilton and Allan Pacey, members of the fertility society's board of directors.
They say that part of the problem is that Britain banned anonymous sperm donation in 2005.
Children who were born to a donor can now trace their biological parents once they are 18.
About 4,000 women a year need donor sperm to become pregnant. In 2006, only 307 men registered to become donors.
Is this a case of men not wanting to donate for fear of having the results knocking on their door later?
Or is the part of the problem lower quality donors/sperm due to smoking, alcohol, drug use, adverse genetic factors, etc from donors?
Or is there a stigma for being a donor?

Why is everybody glaring at me?
Where did those pitchforks come from? And what is that rope for?

I think the bigger issue is that the media seem to be spying on me.
And the banning of anonymous donation probably did more than a little damage.

So, you're saying it'll be a vast improvement, right?

Pitchforks? You must have pissed someone else off. If they were Americans, they'd all have high powered rifles.

Maybe the pitchforks is why the Brits are all 'shooting blanks'.

The removal of annonymity is the main reason for the drop off.
When people donate sperm or give their children up for adoption, they usually don't want to have anything to do with the child.
I believe the cause for this is primal. We are hardwired to take care of our offspring. But in this case, our frontal lobe and cognitive centers are making a chioce that is diametrically opposed to our reptillian instinctive brain. The result is a huge source of conflict.
One of the best ways the brain handles conflict is through denial and blocking.
In short, usually, when we do these things we want absolutely nothing to do with it and the thought of your offspring knocking on your door and asking you why you broke the evolutionary and instinctual covenant between parent and offspring is a shame that most human beings cannot bear.
But there is a bright side to the reduced numbers of donors. Means there are a lot more guys in England getting lucky on those one night stands :)

I can just hear Monty Python now:
Sperm, sperm, sperm, sperm, sperm. And more sperm.
