I figured we might have a shot at this before Christmas, but here we've reached that point two holidays earlier...
Gas here (this morning) just passed below the $2 mark...hot damn!

I bought yesterday morning for $2.019. By the end of the day I could have bought it for $1.969.

Where do y'all live? Here in Louisiana, a pretty big producer and somewhat smaller refiner of oil, gas is still selling at $2.52.

Funny, Don, cause I'm really surprised. I didn't think we'd ever get below 2 bucks again.

I'm so jealous. Here it's nowhere near $2 a gallon. I think $2.89 or so, unless you buy a full tank and a car wash, which takes it down to $2.79.

Yesterday I saw several brand name gas stations selling at $1.969 (Exxon, BP, Texaco), and some no-name stations at $1.949. I've been getting only 10 gallons at a time, the last time three days ago at $2.299. Gotta wait until the tank is down to 1/4 tank again--unless the prices start going back up again--then--full tank!

In Ohio this morning, I paid $2.12 a gallon.

We're still paying $2.25 or so but we've consistantly been one of the lowest areas in Michigan to get gas all summer, so I anticipate it will drop in the next day or so.
I don't mind paying around $2.50 for gas...I think it's high enough to make people think twice about wasting gas but low enough to not be a huge burden on people. If it gets too low we'll just drop right back into the "low care factor" about conserving gas and developing alternative fuels.

Just heard on the news....$2.68 in the east valley, part of the Phoenix Metro area.

1.999 here in South-Central Kansas.
I'll need to do some comparison shopping on an upcoming trip...

Monday I bought gas at $2.68. Tuesday it dropped to $2.57. Wednesday morning I filled up again at $2.47. It dropped to $2.36 by evening. I don't know where the price stands now.
Although I'm happy with the falling prices, this volatility makes me nervous.

Hovering just above $2.00/gal here in Atlanta, where a couple weeks ago it was mostly unavailable and selling just under $4.00/gal.
This is such a weird century.

It's down to $2.17 for regular gas/$3.35 for diesel in the Harrisburg, Pa. area. I did see an independent selling regular for $2.25 and midgrade for $2.89.
Good luck with that pricing scheme.

The last time I remember it was that period in between Katrina and the '06 elections. That was in Missouri.

The October surprise?
October Surplus is what it looks like. People learned a little about conserving gas at $4 per gallon, then the mortgage crisis dominoed into everything else.
Hmm, I see some new Congressional hearings on the horizon:

$2.34 around the start of the Appalachian Trail. I guess it has to be trucked in from those big Doraville storage tanks.

Wow it's funny to see the fast differences in gas prices. Here in Northern VA, I live in one of the cheapest towns for gas - I paid $2.35 today. Well, I paid $2.55. But the 87 octane was at 2.35

Back when Ike struck, gas prices around here were some of the highest: up to $4.30. But now it's just weird it's some of the lowest, at under $2. Not sure how that works. But it's true that people have learned to conserve more and drive less. Nationwide, I think demand has dropped by about 5%.

There were two competing theories about the insane rise in gas prices. One was that manipulators and speculators were driving the price up, and that the rise was mostly artificial.
The other was that it was no more than free market supply and demand.
Which scenario seems more plausible now?

One town nearby has it as low as $2.49...neighboring town has it still at $2.94...going along the main road in town it varies as much as .25. I don't think the gas stations know what to gouge...I mean 'charge'...us nowadays. I mean, it 'should' be below $2/gallon because of how cheap oil has become....but then, that cheap oil isn't made into gas we can use for what...a month or so? At least that's the excuse I keep hearing as to why it takes so long for the gas prices to come down (vs the low oil prices). The gas stations are still using the 'expensive' oil...
Funny...when the price of oil is low and goes up, the price of gas immediately goes up, even though the gas stations are still using the 'cheap' oil.

A big chunk of the drop in oil prices is that the value of the dollar has increased a lot over the last few weeks. Well, it wasn't so much that the dollar rose, but that the euro fell. Apparently the consensus is that European central banks are going to need to cut rates even deeper in response to the credit crisis. That drove the value of the euro down, which strengthened the dollar.
Anyway one dollar today buys a good bit more oil than it did six weeks ago.

Here on the MS Gulf Coast, it's about $2.29 per gallon.
It's usually cheapest here.
Hope it goes down and stays down.

When Ike struck it got to 5.50 here. It was ridiculous. And people were lined up b/c the news did a story that "it could reach $8-10."

And the press helped fan the panic buy which helped stoke the spike in prices. Nice.

When I was in Bloomfield, New Jersey last weekend it was lower by about 4 cents (times 12 1/2 gallons...meh)

Asheville, NC - 2 1/2 weeks ago 4.09 a gal for regular - but we were also caught up in the "no-gas coming up the mountain because of Ike" panic. Today AM - 2.49. PM 2.42 - I'll probably top off tomorrow.
I'll bet strengthening dollar AND people changing their habits and deciding they liked using less gas.
