Another of the irreplaceable Great Actors moves on to the higher stage.

Newman was born the same year as my (departed) Dad in our hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. He was an East Sider (Shaker Heights) and we were on the West Side.

With his astonishing good looks, it's no surprise that life's eddies and currents eventually swept Newman into the acting world. But the thing I most admired about Newman's professional acting career is that he never let his looks carry his performances. He was a hard, dedicated worker who got so deeply into his characters that you never doubted his portrayals. I have so many favorites concerning his films, but perhaps his best performance was as the alcoholic lawyer in the great film The Verdict. Perfectly underscores Newman's NON-reliance on his looks and charm and charisma. As gritty and raw a characterization as you'll ever find. Another example is the great newspaper flick Absence Of Malice.

My family and some friends already know about my memorization of lines from Newman classics such as The Sting and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Cool Hand Luke. I memorize lines and dialogue from selected films, mostly as a way to honor them. I perceive motion pictures as works of art, and Paul Newman's contributions to the cinematic canvas are top drawer. I will miss him a lot.

"I just don't want a hothead looking to get even coming back halfway through saying it ain't enough, because it's all we're gonna get."

"You see anybody kid, you let us know, you got that? If Lonigan puts the finger on you we gotta fold the con."

"Nice to meet ya kid, you're a real horse's ass."

"Butch Cassidy's Hole in the Wall Gang, that's ME! You want Harvey to do your planning for you, you want him to do your thinking for you? You can shut up now, News!"

"Naw, it couldn't be him. Baltimore never leaves Oklahoma, you know that. I don't know where we are but it sure as hell isn't Oklahoma! Couldn't be him."

"Australia! Secretly I figured you wanted to know so I told you. Australia. They speak English there so we wouldn't be foreigners. They got thousands of miles we could hide out in. Plus it's surrounded by water - you could learn to swim!"

"I can eat fifty eggs!"

"I'm shakin' it boss, still shakin' it!"

"Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' is a real cool hand."

Great man, great actor, and the only Hollywood liberal that I admired. He was well respected by his peers.

He was one of a kind. My wife thought he was the best looking guy - ever. "Cool Hand Luke," and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" were my favorites. I'd love to be able to write half as well as he acted.

A monument of world cinema.

The Sting was one of my favorite movies early on, and got me interested in heist movies in general.
