View Full Version : Dark Knight withdrawl?

Does anyone else have this problem?
I just saw Dark Knight last night for the 7th time, and I already can't wait to see it again. It seems the more I see it, the sooner I need to see it again. I couldn't even take a bathroom break, because I don't want to miss anything, and I practically know the whole movie by heart. I keep going to see it because it's greatest comic book movie I've ever seen, and I know there is only a finite number of times I will able to see it in the theater. But even if I knew I could see it in the theatre for the rest of my life, I would probably still keep going.
Has anyone else ever had a movie like this?

Have you seen other films to break the cycle? I'm sure you've seen them both, but The Departed and The Prestige (yay for Bale/Nolan films) are DK-ish and awesome.
... take me next time you go? :)

I had a rather serious addiction to Sweeny Todd, Howl's Moving Castle and The Matrix. I knew it was serious when I couldn't look at my fiancee while she was on the phone without a distinct fear that something bad was about to happen.

Been there with Nolan's Prestige and first Batman film.
Lost and Delirious and Secret of Roan Inish probably went a long way toward burning out my last DVD player

Terry Gilliam's Brazil, Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and Fritz Lang's Metropolis...
Right now I think I am having this with There Will Be Blood. I have watched the final scene around 15 times on youtube today

I was like that when The Fisher King came out on VHS.
There Will Be Blood definitely deserves a second or third viewing--it's rare for me to revisit films much these days, but this is the exception. I absolutely agree with Maxmorden about the last scene--great fireworks and yet so abrupt. Then, when you're done, look for the Saturday Night Live I Drink Your Milkshake! sketch.

Wow, and I thought TDK was MY favorite film. Yeesh. The most I've ever seen a movie in the theatre is The Fifth Element, which I saw I think a total of five times. Not only was I a teenager at that point with completely disposable income (no worries about feeding myself or paying rent), it was the coolest thing I had ever seen up to that point. Also, it just so happened that various friends wanted to go at different times.
The only other movie I've seen multiple times is Kenneth Branaugh's Hamlet. That is correct, I sat through all four hours TWICE.

No.
What makes you think I've ever seen a movie more than 7 times in the theatre?
I mean, okay, so I would go out and buy boxes of Cheerios just for the free movie coupons on the box. And I think I ate mostly hot dogs and popcorn for three years running.
And I know where just about every theatre is in Southern Ontario.
But it's not from seeing the same three movies over and over again. No ways.
(BTW, you need to watch Dark Knight 14 more times to beat my record. :D)
ETA: In theatres only! Can't count the times I've watched all or parts of the DVD of RotK. Weekly, at least.

Are you serious???? That sounds like a challenge...my record for one movie is 11 times for Trainspotting!!! But that was a limited release, and Dark Knight is probably going to be at the theater for a while, so I think I can beat that.
KatieMac,
I have seen The Departed, and I love it! I do need to see it again. The first thing I thought after watching Dark Knight was, "Wow, this is even better than The Departed!" They are somewhat similar in style, and I was gushing about The Departed for weeks after I saw it, too. I have heard The Prestige was good, although I'm really not a fan of Christian Bale. The only time I have ever liked him was American Psycho.

Has anyone else ever had a movie like this?V for Vendetta caught me like that.
Half a dozen times in the cinema before the enfeebled dolts who run it bumped it from the schedule in favour of Ice Age 2. Idiots.
Sin City probably would have if I'd seen it at the cinema.

It depends how you count it. 21 times for Return of the King. 19 times for Fellowship of the Rings. 17 times for The Two Towers.
Or pretty much once a week from December to July for three years running. :D
But it's okay if you beat it.
The Hobbit has yet to be released. And this time around, I have unlimited Cast Passes. :D

14 times for Fellowship Of The Rings. Other than that, usually two is my limit. Oh long time ago, 5 times for My Beautiful Laundrette.
But Yeshanu, don't you work at a movie theatre? Or am I confused about that. As such, I wonder if your record should stand? :D

I classify my DK withdrawl as a need for a great Villian.
The Departed is a good film that may help.
Lord of War, 24 (any season), and Constatine might help also.
But I agree, seen DK three times. Can't wait to buy the DVD. But everytime I see it, i'm so sad that I will never see Heath Ledger's perform an encore role.
God he was so brilliant.
what a shame
As far as other movies i've seen wayyyy too many times.
Shawshank Redemption --At least 10 times
Super Troopers --8 times
Hustle and Flow --7 times
The Departed --10 times
Boiler Room -- 8 times
Hero --6 times
Back to the Future - 15 times
Sin City -- 5 times
I'm Gonna Get Ya Sucka -- 12 times easy

I've seen it 5 times for the same reason and I'd like to see it one more time before it's out. I'd rather tire myself on this movie while it's on the big screen than when it comes to DVD. I mean, once it's gone it's gone and this movie was just an awesome movie to see on the big screen. I feel like a kid when I watch this movie, because I stare at the screen in dumbfounded gawking awe for the entire film. lol
The last movie to do this to me was "The Matrix Reloaded". I saw it like 5 times before it went out of theaters.

Yeah, every now and again a movie hits me like that and I'll watch it 100+ times (literally) on DVD. But after the first couple dozen I'm not really watching, I'm using it to think about other stuff.
V for Vendetta is the all time champ, but I also do a lot of Dawn of the Dead (2004) and, weirdly, The Time Machine which I didn't even really like all that much.

I think the thing that gets me about The Departed or The Dark Knight or V for Vendetta is that the characters are going through some serious pain and darkness so rarely captured by hollywood.
I contend that the public is starving for that type of realism in film.
I get so tired of the 'hero' overcoming all odds to save the day with some twist of fate and 'luck' brought about by his special skill while the brilliant villian becomes a moron in the last 10 minutes of the film.
Even though I was routing for the MC in the Departed or V for Vendetta, the ending was the perfect ending for those films.

I was like this with The Prestige. I couldn't get enough of it.
Of course I've seen TDK four times now, so I'm a pretty low-ranking member on the "Rabid fans" list.
The only other movie to have that affect on me... well, it wasn't even a whole movie... it was the light-saber battle between Maul and the two Jedi in Phantom Menace. I saw damn near every movie that came out that summer, often times just so I could skip out on the movie I paid for in time to hop into Phantom Menace during that scene (no way I was going to sit through that whole damn mess again) and then either go back to the movie I paid for or just leave.

I agree. I own the Presitge and the Illusionist.
And I feel you on the fight scene.
Speaking of fight scenes, a lot of highschool kids have put together some impressive light saber battles on you tube. Many times, the choreography is better than hollywood. (especially if you factor in creativity and lack of million dollar budget)
Just go to you tube type in Light saber fights and whoola, you'll be swimming in em.

Note to self: Do NOT drink Mojitos while watching Dark Knight. You have have to pee, and there are no good times to pee during Dark Knight. You will inevidably miss something cool.
That article was interesting. I do think that lesser known villians are the way to go. It certainly worked in Batman Begins. I think Nolan said that he wanted to focus on the more obscure villians, and the real reason he did the Joker is because you can't have Batman without the Joker.

I noticed today that the theater in my area has cut TDK to only one time a day. This makes me sad and a little ansy to go watch it one more time as it's on its way out.
To explain why: TDK is a looong movie, and the management and usher staff has to stay until the film's rolled all the way through the projector. :) Having two evening start times (6:30 and 10 pm) means we're at work until 12:45 am, all for about ten people. With attendance at all time lows this month, theatres are looking to cut hours, and the best way to do that is to have TDK show at 8:00 pm, which means the staff is out of the theatre two hours earlier than otherwise.
Anyhow, I haven't seen it yet either, but if I do, it'll be before it's out of the theatres. Everyone who's seen it says that this is not a small screen movie, and if you can see it in IMAX, go for it!
I wore my Joker dress to the IMAX yesterday.
So that was YOU, Celia? Oh, wait. We don't have IMAX, so it couldn't have been you. But we did have two girls in the other day in full Joker garb. And yeah, we thought they were nuts. But who am I to say, who went to work for a week or two in full pirate get-up?

The Dark Knight screenwriter David Goyer is baffled by reports he's working on a second sequel to 2005's Batman Begins - because he hasn't even discussed the possibility with director Christopher Nolan.
Goyer was rumoured to have reteamed with Nolan to pen a script for another installment of the superhero franchise following the huge box office success of this summer's The Dark Knight.
The film has grossed $988 million (GBP534 million) worldwide since its July release.
But Goyer insists there are no plans for another Batman movie just yet, telling MTV, "It's all B.S. (bulls**t). All of it."
He adds, "Chris and I haven't even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself.
"We have mused here and there (but) I mean Chris is pretty much a one-movie-at-a-time kind of guy. I wish I could tell you more. There really isn.t anything to tell."

Good, i'd rather they took all the time they need and make a worthy third installment than rush it and make crap. I trust Nolan - lets give the man some time to think and some R&R.

I don't know why you would think that, though. The cast alone is enough reason to believe that Dark Knight would be better than a crappy Hollywood superhero movie.
Watchmen is just something I have never wanted to see made into a movie, and I still don't. The trailer does nothing for me, and I'm not impressed by the cast at all. I don't really see the point of watching it. I would rather just reread it.
I preordered Dark Knight on Overstock.com! I can't freaking wait! Although it does make me a little sad, because that means I won't be able to see it in the theater for much longer!
I have seen it 12 times, going for the 13th tomorrow.
Anyway...as for the next movie, I predict that whether it is good or bad, most people will hate it.

The cast is not enough, if is for the cast only The Golden Compass should have been something great, but it wasn't; and not the first time I have been disappointed with something I would think it was going to be great or classic and just blew in my face (It's possibly that it will happen again with Watchmen)
But you have a point, a really good one. That' why I am convincing a lot of people of reading the graphic novel before March. I don't want them to suffer the same thing that happened to me with V for Vendetta in which I adore the graphic novel, but I read it after seeing the movie, so it was a bit ruined to me.
Sounds like if Watchmen becomes a failure I shall suffer a great dissapointment... I can be such a naive moron at times...

Are they adding additional footage?
Maybe re-releasing to keep it fresh in the minds of Oscar voters? I've seen that done with other summer films hoping for Oscar attention.

I've heard it's going back to IMAX. I don't know if it's also regular theaters. I wouldn't be surprised if it has something to do with Oscars--I'm hoping for a screenwriting nomination (if they're basing it on adapted materials--I don't think it counts for original screenplay, and I don't think it could win there) along with one for Ledger.

Maybe re-releasing to keep it fresh in the minds of Oscar voters? I've seen that done with other summer films hoping for Oscar attention.
My understand was that this was the reason. And yeah, I think it is just at the IMAX. I think it's a good idea. Heath Ledger deserves a best actor nomination, and the film deserves a best picture nomination. But superhero movies don't usually get that.
Either way, I am happy. It's already gone from the IMAX where I live!

Best picture, yes, that too. Although I'm guessing Heath would snag a Supporting nom, even if he was the best thing in the movie.

Went to see it again now that it's playing the $4 theater. Should not go on a Saturday night tho (#@^!*m kids...get off my f#@^!* lawn already...)
Popcorn movie? How about subversive and potently dark, like a whole four pack of Guinness. A movie like this gives me hope.
PS Yes I started reading The Watchmen - will also have to buy The Killing Joke as no store in my area seems to have it for bookstore reading.

okay, so i'm probably really late to this particular dance, but remember when the movie first came out and there was a discussion about what batman did with scarecrow and did he let him go? i was just watching it and he doesnt. he ties him up with the fake batmans. The guy that says "not in my diagnosis" is scarecrow. But you guys probably already knew that and i'm really late. lol

Have you seen another superhero movie that deserved one? Genuinely serious.
Sf/F films rarely get noms, and hardly ever actually win (thinking of Star Wars, here).

One of them did win, though. :D
It does happen...
As for Heath, if he doesn't get a nomination for best supporting actor, something's really wrong in Hollywood. I'm thinking that it's even possible he'll win, given Hollywood's sentimental streak.

It's all going to come down to the winter releases. So far the only buzz I'm hearing is Revolutionary Road, Rachel Getting Married and Benjamin Button, etc., all movies that are designed for Best Actor/Actress material. The Supporting category is usually underrated with buzz, anyway, but Heath wouldn't be contending with Hollywood powerhouses. And they gave the statue to Bardem's villain last year. As far as I'm concerned the nomination is inevitable. And if Heath doesn't win I'll eat my hat.

No. And that's disappointing. Superhero movies should be good enough for best picture nominations, and if this one doesn't get it, it's because the crappy superhero movies of the past have dragged down the reputation of the genre. This is the first one that deserves it, which is why it might not get it.
But then again, I love comics, but only like a handful of superhero movies.
If Heath doesn't get the nomination, there's not justice in this world.

I also hope he gets nominated, but I think it's hard since he passed away (the only man to win an actual posthumous Oscar got it since he dies too close to the event and there wasn't time to take off his name from the ballots)

Oh, The Killing Joke is sick as hell! I love it! I read it when I was much too young, but it was what made me like the Joker. I mean, any Batman fan likes the Joker, but he was never my favorite. He did kill Robin, after all. The Killing Joke went much further than the comic ever did. When you read it, you can see how it influenced The Dark Knight.

Celia, I demand you send me a PM of all the comics/graphic novels you think I should read. :) I've only read a handful--Killing Joke included--so chance of repeats is slim.

I think it'll be okay. Critics have been raving about his performance and the buzz existed 6 months before the film released. No one's forgetting what he accomplished in the film any time soon, and like I said upthread so far there's not any Supporting buzz to compete. I was just reading an article where they listed 32 contenders for this year's Oscar race. Only two were Supporting--Ledger and Cruz, for the latest Woody Allen flick.
Of course, Oscar season has only just started, but usually there's an inkling of who to watch.

It's official. Warner Bros. announced today they're pursuing a Supporting Oscar nomination for Ledger.
Apparently critics are betting that Ledger's strongest contender will be Phillip Seymour Hoffman for a supporting role in Doubt. Hoffman beat Ledger in the Best Actor category two years ago.

Sorry,
If Ledger does not win, I will boycott the Oscars for life.
His performance was the MAIN reason why we went back to see TDK.
He was soooo good it was scary

Yes. I loved the movie. The story and script were excellent, and so were the rest of the actors. But what really drew me in was his Joker. I thought that character was unfilmable.
I usually see acting as solving a puzzle. I get the script, and I look for the best possible answer as to how to interpret the character. Then, you have a performance in which there is no puzzle to solve, and the actor is just creating something, which is what he did here.

I'm sure you're familiar with the story, but apparently Nolan and Ledger took great lengths to discuss and create the character together. Then, Ledger completely blew Nolan away anyway.
