Inspired by Serenity in the "Movie Stuff that's Always Bugged You" thread, here's our chance to point the proverbial finger at the most overused audio effect in Hollywood history, the infamous Wilhelm Scream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PxALy22utc). You know the one, that sound editor Ben Burt (Star Wars / Indiana Jones) uses in just about every movie he does.

So, play 'find the Wilhelm Scream' and let us know where you heard it. :)

I'll start with The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Last night I heard it in the battle for Helm's Deep when one of the defenders falls from the wall protecting the deep.

See how many you can find! :D

It's amazing, the things you learn at AW. I'll keep my ears open from now on. :)

First time I ever heard it was in Them--James Whitmore 'uses' it when the giant ant crushes him with its pincers.

I've heard it in dozens of movies--I'll try to come up with more.

I think I heard it in Peter Jackson's King Kong.

Awww... my very own inspired thread! I'm so proud. :D

And it's actually used in all three Lord of the Rings movies. Twice in Return of the King, if I remember correctly. I had it on in the background as I finished unpacking my room today. As soon as I heard it, my head snapped up and I groaned.

In Return of the Jedi, on Tattooine, when the alien dude falls into the Sarlac (sp?) pit.

Isn't it in Raiders when Indy drives the truck over the Nazi after recovering the Ark?

Here's a youtube vid with a bunch of film scenes using the sound.

Wait, I never realized this! It is really the same soundbyte used in every film!

Omigoodness I am going to have so much fun trying to find them in movies from now.

Funny, this is going to be like discovering that Ted Danson wears a wig. Once you know its there, you can't help but see it.

I love trivia like this. Hilarious. Can't wait to start recognizing it in films

I'm going to see Clone Wars tonight for my column (yeah, it only just got to my little burg). I'll try to keep my ears peeled and report back. If it isn't in there, it'll be the first Star Wars movie without it.

I'm pretty dang sure I heard it in Reservoir Dogs. It was soft, but it was there.
