Not exactly earth shattering but I found this somewhat amusing since I live in Chicago and for anyone who has ever worked here or I would imagine any big city you would have to know that the rules for city employees are different.

CHICAGO RULES...

1st. Police are entitled to all basic fares of food without charge from the following: donut shops, coffee shops, candy shops, and free haircuts from barber shops. This arrangement guarantees quicker response in times of criminal activity since most of the time a police officer will be stationed in your store when the crime takes place.

2nd. Fireman.... They don't get the same perks as policeman but, in Chicago they bring out the collection boot once a year and as a shop owner it is in your best interest to empty the cash register in to that boot to prevent a fire from starting in your shop.

3rd. Garbage men....In chicago you are allowed one bag of garbage per household or business per family picked up free of charge, anything else requires the "wetting of the foreman's beak" Hence the removal of an old washingmachine will cost you about 10 bucks or a case of beer, (In Chicago alcohol is as good as cash)

4th. To build a new structure, (very complicated as to the amount of people who must receive "beak wetting) But a few of the easy ones.
County commisioner
Alderman
Ward Committee man
Electrical Inspector
Fire Inspector
Porch Commissioner
Mayors office Liason
Water commissioner
Building Commissioner
Building Inspector.

Usual out of pocket fee's for these fine public servants range from 2 cases of beer to several thousands of dollars in political donations, not too bad.

...And they fire this poor bastard in Florida for demanding a Starbucks...HEY PAL CHICAGO IS YOUR KIND OF TOWN... COME ON UP........

That is Florida though. I live in Bradenton Florida and there really is a HUGE lack of respect for our officers here.

Why do you think the Mafia made its home New York, they couldn't compete with Chicago politicians.

I have no problems with businesses that willingly give Police Officers free fare, but I do have a problem when a Police Officer demands it.

In fact, this Officer sounds like an outright jerk and deserved to be fired. Maybe he can go become a Barney Fife like deputy sheriff in some small backwater town.

There are a million places that will give cops free coffee. Why not go to one of them?

Granted, Starbucks is pretty special. *insert eye roll*

Demanding free coffee seems a little over the top. Guys like this give cops a bad name. What an ass.

Maryn, who agrees it gives cops everywhere a black eye

I would think Starbucks would be a little too yuppyish for their tastes. Aren't cops more blue collar? Now Dunkin Donuts. I imagine they all hang out there.

I was about to say something similar. And I have to wonder if this comparatively minor incident wasn't just piled on top of a lot of other crap this jerk may have pulled, both in and out of his office. I'd bet there's some backstory here.

I agree. I'm betting he was an all around dirty cop, extorting more serious money out of others.

But that's just a guess on my part, I've read nothing to indicate that that might be the case.

Ballesy sort of fellow, I'll give him that much. But, what this guys family must think of him has got to be priceless, you lost a 50k plus a year job for a freaken cup of coffee.
Would I be safe to nominate him for ASSHOLE OF THE DAY, something I usually reserve for myself....

I have no problems with businesses that willingly give Police Officers free fare, but I do have a problem when a Police Officer demands it.If you work a neighborhood and get to know the businesses, you find most of them really offer free coffee or even a discounted meal because they want to show their appreciation, not because they feel they have to. It can almost seem rude to insist on paying for your coffee.

Back when I worked, (pre Starbucks, at least in my town) coffee was generally 50 cents. If I was at a diner, I'd take the free coffee and leave the waiter or waitress a buck tip. Most of the cops I worked with did the same, although there were certainly some out to get every perk they could.

Well said. I didn't think of that. Lol.

The coffee he asked for probably cost $23.

Cops stick their neck out for people all the time and often get very little thanks in return. So when I'm at the gas station and I see the cashier give that "Your money ain't good here" wave, I don't really mind. Frankly, the poor pricks deserve freebies. They don't get paid enough for what they do, and their uniforms inspire fear and loathing in many, many people. I do not begrudge the police their free slushies, coffees, hot dogs, and whatever else cashiers decide not to charge them for.

But if I saw a cop demanding free things -- I'd call the police and report a robbery, honestly. And if the 911 operator asked, I'd say it was someone pretending to be a cop.

Because frankly, he would be.
