I must vent.

I just found out that they made a movie of Brideshead Revisited. I first found out about the novel from the British miniseries (13 glorious hours with Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews, Lord Olivier)

It is one of my favourite novels of all time and certainly the best adaptation ever, and magnificently acted and directed.

Now they've made this 2 hour movie and from the trailer it looks like they completely changed it. Emma Thompson plays Lady Flyte and it looks like the movie is all about her and there are scenes in there that are not in the book. They've completely changed what the book is about.

I apologize to everyone who has ever complained that a movie is nothing like the book they so love, and whom I patted on the head and said "there, there, you can't compare the two." I still believe that, but omg they completely changed the meaning of the book, the underlying themes. I can tell from the trailer. That was not clever cutting of a movie to make an appealing trailer. Half that trailer was not in the book.

Charles did not have anything to do with Julia, Sebastian's sister, until long after he was done with Sebastian. There was never a confrontation between Sebastian and Charles about Julia. Charles did not have sex with Julia i during the first summer he was at Brideshead. Charles did not have an affair with Julia until after she married the American. Not to mention that they turned Sebastian into this whiny milquetoast. Sebastian was charming, devilish, irresistable. Not girly and weak and whiny. WTF?

Bah. I'm completely disgusted. That's one movie I won't be seeing. I think I'll watch the miniseries this weekend. And read the book.

Thank you for listening. You may now return to your regularly scheduled activities.

Yes, they've completely changed the tone of Waugh's masterpiece. I saw the trailer a few months ago and thought, "Ew."

This remake has been in production for ever. Originally, Jude Law was set to star. I assumed at the time that he was attached to play Sebastian (arguably the most interesting character in the book) but once I saw the trailer, I realized he was probably attached to play Charles (such a wet noodle, imho). The plot had been retooled, possibly with the intent of getting a big name to star. It's sad, really. If they wanted to make THAT movie, fine! Just don't label it Brideshead Revisited!

Hadn't heard, but it's now on my list of "Don't Bother to See"s.

I hate it when they re-make films (or mini-series, or TV shows) that were originally "masterpieces" (what-ever you take that word to mean in this case). They are just so afraid of losing money that they chose things that people have already seen and ignore the new material that might be coming out. It is all of silly, that's what it is.

I have read about this new Brideshead remake. Apparently they are concentrating on the relationship between Charles / Julia and downplaying the vastly more interesting friendship between Charles/ Sebastian. What a waste of an opportunity. No doubt this will be just another piece of romantic fluff. Just as well I lost all faith in anything 'Hollywood' years ago, or i might have had cause to be disappointed.
