...the line of melted wax that forms as a candle diminishes?

Yeah, I know it's a weird question, but it's for my fantasy novel and google was not too helpful. Is there a term for this, or is it just called "line of wax"?

You mean when it drips? Or the slightly-discolored wax that has softened but not melted that forms the top of the candle? Or something else?

I doubt it has an offical name. I'd call it a line of of molten/melted wax. How'd I''d write it depends on the context. Can you provide one?

Well, imagine a candle sitting on a desk, tall at the beginning of the afternoon, but as night carries on, it gets shorter and shorter. Meanwhile, the melted wax has formed a ribbon that leads from the diminishing candle to the desk, then down the side.

I suppose "ribbon of wax" will suffice.

A dribble of wax. An icicle of wax. I know when the wax is melted down a bit and there is more burnt wick than needed, the flame is sooty and this is called guttering. Just in case you can use a trivial piece of fact.

'excess melted wax will run down the side (guttering)'

I googled "candle gutter" and got the website with the above quote. Their write-up on beeswax candles had far more information on candles than I needed to know (right now). It might help answer any more candle-related questions for you.
