Help with editing novel

Hi!

I just finished my first novel and it is going to be published this coming summer by a POD publisher in Holland. (I am from Holland myself). I am working now on an English translation of my book because I want to have more options open for trying it in America also. Only, English isn't my first language, and there will be some editing necessary, spelling-check and grammar! Are there publishers who do this? Or is there another way to find (free) help with this?

Hallo André,

I'm Dutch myself, I live in Limburg and I do write in English (I used to live in the UK for a number of years and in Manhattan for a while)
When I used to live in the UK I did some freelance translating from English to Dutch. I’m sure you should be able to find someone in Sweden who is a certified translator who can have a look at your book. I don’t know what the rates would be though.

If you want to submit it to an editor in America or the UK your English needs to be impeccable, they won’t take it on if it’s riddled with spelling / grammar mistakes.

I hate to be the one to tell you, but nothing in life is for "free" including editing! Beware of scams is my advice to you.

I'd say $25 to $50 an hour or $1500+ to edit a ms for plain English so with translation needed you are probably looking at double on the low side. I'm sure someone on this fine board will know more than I do, though.

Hi! Bedankt and thanks for the advice. Seems that the best way for me, is just doing it myself as good as possible and then ask someone to check it again. I translated 12 of the 19 chapters. From the other book that I am working on, I did the same and asked my english teacher, who workes on a book himself, to help me and he did with the first 4 chapters. He is more british english and it really reads like a harry potter book now, (I like the british english though). But the good man has a lot of work himself and asking these things as a favor is something that I can't do. Maybe I should ask him for lunch...
