View Full Version : Need Advice - Agents crossing genres

I finally have my novel and synopsis ready to go. I'm considering sending queries to a few agents.

One agent in particular handles novels in my genre and emphasizes children's picture books. I write children's picture books as well, with two under consideration at different houses. With respect to sales, I've sold pieces to 3 top children's magazines so far.

While I'm not seeking an agent for the children's book in particular, I wouldn't turn down the opportunity. When writing the cover letter to the agent, does it seem "scattered" to mention my ventures in children's writing when I'm specifically seeking representation for my novel?

Also, should I send one of my pb manuscripts along to demonstrate my work in that area, or stick soley with the novel packet? Part of me feels that if the agent turns down representation of the novel, I also lose my chance to query the same agent later for my picture books and should therefore include a pb now.

Does anyone have any advice or similar experience? Thank you!

Hey, Julie:

One project at a time. I'd query the agent based solely on the work you want her to represent (in this case, your novel), not pitch other projects. And no, I wouldn't send anything other than what her guildlines specify; however, a carefully worded query letter should touch on all relevant publishing credits--so you could mention your published works. And finally, even if this agent turns down the opportunity to look at or rep your novel, that's a pass on the one project, not on you as a potential client. You would still be able to query her about other projects, such as your picture books. My two cents!

And, of course, the best of luck.

If you have legitimate publishing credits, by all means mention them in your query letter, in the paragraph that reads "My previous publishing credits include [X], [Y], and [Z]."

Use only the most recent and most prestigious sales.
