Seriously, I'm annoyed. Everyone who auditioned knew what the commitment would be. It would be different if Bass had contacted Jenna privately to say that something came up, truly sorry, etc. But just to be a no show...? Geez.

Well, the only good excuse would be dead. His bio here says nothing about him and he only posted twice. His website doesn't say he's dead. But if he's not, that's pretty crappy, and the least he could do would be to notify somebody, unless he's dead, of course.

I for one really, really hope that Bass is just a giant jerk or completely missed the changed dead-line. I'd rather that be the case than some sort of accident/emergency/tragedy--which I admit, was my first thought when he didn't post.

Was a good show. I'm trying to stop doing radio shows right now, though, because they haven't done much for my book sales. I keep meaning to tell my publicist to quit pitching me for radio... I enjoy it, but it's not worth it if it doesn't translate to sales.

Okay, so Bass didn't get an entry in by deadline. And I guess a lot of the honourable mentions (of which I am one) feel they were cheated out of a spot in the finals.

But let's consider a few possibilities as to what might have happened.

First of all, entries had to be sent in from a computer via the Internet. Now if you could pick two of the weakest links any chain, these would have to be it. I like to think I've got a pretty reliable set up, but even I've been off the air for hours at a time for various reasons. Maybe he tried to get his (possibly an assumption, although I don't hear of too many women calling themselves 'bass') entry in, but couldn't because his Pc died, or his connection was down, or any of the hundred things that can go wrong with technology.

Then there's the topic and word count. Maybe the topic was one of those niggling ones that he couldn't gt a handle on. (I know I would have struggled with it). And 2500 words is a lot of words to crank out in a week if you're juggling a dozen other writing projects, not to mention having a life. Yes, I know we're probably expected to drop everything and devote ourselves to the task, but if you've got a sick kid, or you're stuck at work night after night, you just might not be able to do it. (Yes, I know 2500 words was just the maximum, but I'd feel kind of obligated to get somewhere near it).

So until we hear otherwise, maybe we should just give him the benefit of the doubt.

Besides, what's an Idol competition without a little controversy?

One more thought on the "I coulda been a contender" thing: Given that the judges picked 11 entries to go in the Top 10, I think this is really serendipity (however it's spelled). Now there are 10 finalists, as planned.
