it's always brought up in the strangest of places. here ya go:
WASHINGTON (AP) - Cindy McCain, who two weeks ago said she would never make her tax returns public, revealed Friday that she had a total income of more than $6 million in 2006.
The presidential campaign of her husband, Republican John McCain, released the top two summary pages of her 2006 tax return, eager to avoid making her earlier refusal an issue in the contest.
The documents show that Mrs. McCain, who files her taxes separately from her husband, paid more than $1.7 million in federal income taxes—a tax rate of more than 28 percent.
what was your tax rate?

I don't understand why any of the candidates would make their personal finances public, much less (if they don't file jointly) their wives' finances. We all know they're rich. You generally can't make it in politics unless you have money. So what's the point of knowing? If there were something illegal going on, odds are it would have already been discovered and prosecuted. It's not like these people live low-profile lives.

it's interesting to note that the mccain's maintain their finances separately under the terms of a pre-nup.
we likely would have never gotten spouse information from michelle obama or bill clinton if those couples filed separately.

Why do you think they wouldn't be compelled to release their information, just because they file separately? It has been commonplace for such a disclosure. I don't know that I feel it would be different simply because of separate filing.
I, myself, could care less how much any of them make. I just want to know how the candidate will lead!

it's customary, but not required.

while it's customary for the spouse to do so, there is far greater public scrutiny for the candidates themselves. if they file jointly, then the release of their combined income results.
that was my point.

She makes more than me. But less than Teresa...who also files separately and didn't release complete tax returns, if memory serves.

But who did catch a lot of crap for it from right-wing commentators.

THK released hers in october, yes?Was it the whole thing, or just a partial? I think it was just a partial.
Here's an article (http://www.nationalreview.com/stuttaford/stuttaford200410190840.asp) from October on the subject.

it was the two page 1040 summary, same as mccain.
and, for that matter, the same as john and elizabeth edwards in 2004.

Okey-dokey. I'll accept that. I trust you implicitly. But she didn't give it up right away. We should give Cindy til October before we bury her for having the audacity to make money, right?

She inherited a rather lucrative company. . .and a minor stake in some sports team. But the good she's done has been pretty exemplary, including adoption and foundations and blah, blah, blah. And she sure didn't have to.

Pressure to excite class envy against the McCains no doubt.

Here's what I'm thinking, she needs a better accountant.
Wait, I'm joking.
She's rich, she needs to pay more.
or am I joking there?
so hard to tell, isn't it?
