It couldn't have possibly have to do with the fact that he has Hagee as his spiritual adviser, does it?

oh for Pete's sake. That's all you can come up with? What this is is darn smart politics. He can afford to take the high road--the Democrats are swarming all over the low one without his assistance.
The AZ Senator added today that he believes “it is clear” that Obama does not share the world view of Rev. Wright and stated his intention to run an issue-centric campaign.
That should be what you take from that article instead of some crap about Hagee. I am an undecided independent and quite frankly this whole issue about Wright is so ridiculously overblown as to descend into the realms of sheer idiocy. McCain stated his opinion--the least any of us can do is commend it, regardless of the hyperbolic posturings of the rest of his party.
Thank the gods that someone in this horrific election season has a modicum of sense. It's not enough for me to pledge support for McCain but it sure as hell is a good first step.

My everyone-sucks outlook: McCain might just feel he has a slightly better shot at beating Obama than Hilary.

Or, McCain knows that it will be brought up anyway, and he wants to distance himself from it before it happens.
Or all three.

so what's with the ad -- the one below the speech?!!!!!!!?
This time the North Carolina Republican party has launched a new TV spot tying local Democrats who support Obama to incendiary remarks made by the Democrat’s longtime preacher, Jeremiah Wright.

so what's with the ad -- the one below the speech?!!!!!!!?
In the article, McCain said that he knew there was nothing he could do about the ads the GOP wants to run (and it's a GOP ad, not a McCain campaign ad), so simply wants to disassociate himself from it as far as he can.
That was in the article.

fair enough. The fact of the matter is that the battle between Clinton and Obama is destroying the power base of the Democratic party. You can hate McCain all you like, but put the blame squarely where it belongs.

That's the Big Media talking point. This isn't really "destroying" the Democratic power base. If it were, people would be sick of it by now and the Democratic primary turnouts still wouldn't be as high as they have been. Pennsylvania alone had 300,000 new Democratic voters.

When the Rev. Wright videos first hit it big on TV, I saw them ask McCain's campaign guy (paraphrasing) "What are McCain's views on Rev. Wright's comments and on Rev. Wright endorsing Obama?"
And McCain's guy, his campaign weasel hitman I assume, says something like: John McCain realizes that when someone endorses you, it means THEY agree with YOU, not that you agree with them."
And I thought: classy. John McCain isn't taking the obvious, easy cheap shot there. Good man.
Now, yes, Hagee is the albatross around McCain's neck like Rev. Wright is Obama's ...
Hillary's curse appears to be bad pants suits. :)

Whatever McCain's real motivations are, he has never seemed to me to be a dirty campaigner. I think a McCain-Obama race will actually be pretty civil compared to what we have seen recently. At least as civil as the Clinton-Dole race, which is the most civil presidential race we've had in recent times.

Ahhh so he IS back in the US. Someone asked me that the other day and I wasn't sure. I heard he was in Africa hiding out still.
In any event, I think this shows a lot of character for McCain. It makes him look good yes but it also shows a lot of class. Even though I don't see myself voting for him on issue of policies he has, I think everyone should respect the man (and most people do even most Democrats).
And no I don't think it has to do with Hagee. Hagee may be a pretty sorry person but he's tame compared to Wright.

Well, I gladly accept your vague apology for including me in the "you all" swipe, too, because I especially didn't attack McCain or call him a 'liar' ... though it suggests that your own 'intellectual honesty' needs to be acknowledged not after your first comment, but only upon correction and revision. :)
As for the 'bullshit' comment ...
Dude, take a deep breath.
I didn't claim Hagee was the SAME albatross around McCain's neck, fer cryin' out loud ... just one 'like' Obama's.
BOTH candidates will be unfairly blamed for the extremist and unpretty comments of a religious leader ... associated with them by their foes for reasons of attack.
If you insist on measuring their relative size ... Obama's is admittedly bigger. :D
A bigger 'albatross' that is.
As for Hillary's pants suits ... well, why go there? My position is: they have as much real bearing on her character as Wright or Hagee have on the other candidates. They're ugly, they don't fit, and attacking her for them is equally shallow as slamming a man over another man's comments.

to suggest that rev. wright didn't play a major role in shaping obama's theological and social thought is to ignore a mountain of evidence to the contrary, including both obama's and wright's own words.
to further suggest that black liberation theology and its social tenets don't translate into a political worldview is to ignore the fundamental domestic policy aims of the democratic party.

I always had Jean-Luc pinned as a lefty.
He is.
Gene Roddenberry eliminated supply and demand economics with the ability for an individual to immediately fabricate any inanimate object upon demand through advanced manufacturing technologies. The basis of capitalism was immediately replaced with true economic equality, leading to a universal pursuit of asthetics and knowledge, rather than the virtuous toil of physical labor. The good captain is a product of that social construct.
